In the crisis or in emergency situation the response of natural human being is “What can I do? How can I help?”. Therefore the theme for this year campaign is WHAT YOU CAN DO? With the secondary message of Give Blood. Give Now. Give Often.
The campaign underlines the role every single person can play in helping others in emergency situations, by giving the valuable gift of blood. It also focuses on the fact that it is important to give blood regularly, so that the blood stock is sufficient before an emergency arises.
A Blood service is an important source and is a key component of an effective health system. However, in many countries, blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety for the people who need it.
About 112.5 million blood donations are collected globally, half of these are in high-income countries. About 13 000 blood centers in 176 countries report collecting a total of 110 million donations. Collections at blood centers vary according to income group and data for the Blood Donors have gender profile which shows that globally 30% of blood donations are given by women, although this ranges widely. In 18 of the 118 reporting countries, less than 10% of donations are given by female donors. 57 countries collect 100% of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid blood donors.
Blood can be used whole, or separated into its component parts, such as red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and other “substances” that can be used to treat a wide range of diseases. A single unit of blood can be used to save n number of lives.
Transfusions of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year, including during emergencies such as conflicts, natural disasters, and childbirth.

World Blood Donor Day has been celebrated annually since 2004 on june 14, with the aim of improving the safety and adequacy of national blood supplies by promoting a substantial increase in the number of safe, voluntary, unpaid donors who give blood regularly.
The host country for the global event of World Blood Donor Day 2017 is Viet Nam through its National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT). The Global event will be held in Hanoi on 14 June 2017.
