Want to Save Some Money Moving House, Consider these UNIQUE options!

Hiring Professional Mover Can Be Expensive

Hiring a Professional mover is the first option most people turn to when they think of moving house. However, a professional mover can be quite costly to engage, especially in Singapore where most things are expensive! Certainly, a professional mover offers various benefits that make them worth the higher price we pay for them. Things such as having insurance for your beloved furniture. Furthermore, I’m sure none of us would trust anything but a professional mover to move our most valuable items like our Piano, our antique furniture and other fragile items.

However, that’s not to say that your items are complete safe in the hands of professional Movers. Just search online and I’m sure you’d be able to find many instances of movers who did not do their job properly. That’s not to mention that some of these movers do not offer the most personalized services. After all, these companies are so big that they only send down their staff to deal with you, and not all of them are good!

For those of you that are frustrated with hiring professional movers at high prices, we are House Movers Guide Singapore have some unique alternative solutions for you!

Using EasyVan to get a Mover in Singapore

EasyVan is an app that’s similar to AirBnB. It’s a shared economy system where users can use the app to specify their requirements for transport, and this includes transporting smaller goods like parcels all the way up to booking a whole 14-ft van. When you key in your locations, as well as certain requirements like the type of vehicle you’d need, the App would notify all the drivers in their database, and within seconds, you’d be linked up to a Driver.

What’s Good about using EasyVan?

  • Find Freelance House Movers
  • Flexibility
  • Excellent Customer Service as these people run their own businesses
  • Might be even better than Professional Movers
  • Low Cost Solution
  • Convenient

My Experience Moving House

About a year ago, I used EasyVan to move house. I do not have many furniture at home (It’s a 3-room Flat), so all I needed was a 14-ft Lorry to move. Items were a couple of Sofas, TV, a Fridge, miscellaneous Shelves and Cupboards.

I first called up some professional moving companies, whose names I won’t reveal! The quotes I got from them were in the range of $350 to $500, and this did not include the packing of small items. So what they’ll do is drop by, and pick up whatever you have. The only packing this included was the fridge and TV.

I had heard of EasyVan before, and I was curious to see what kind of rates I would get for a similar service.

For a full 14-ft Lorry, the price was $82. This was for 2 Hours Rental for the entire Truck, which comes with a driver.

This could have been the most cost efficient, but as I was moving alone, I couldn’t possibly move everything myself. I had lots of boxes of stuff to move.

If I wanted the Driver to help me, additional costs were an extra $30. So an Extra Helper would Cost $40.

I selected the option of having a driver + 1 Helper.

This cost me $152 in total.

Quoted $350-$500, Got $152, But Could I trust them?

I placed the booking or the $152 requirements, and within minutes, I was talking to the driver himself. The driver guided me along the entire process, and asked if I needed additional helpers, or extra services like packing of my items into boxes. He made me take pictures of any big items I had, Which were mainly the Fridge, Washing Machine, TV and several shelves and cupboards. This was to make sure that all the items would fit into his Lorry, and also to make sure that he had enough manpower to take care of everything.

On The Day Itself

On the day itself, the guys came down to my house, and to my surprise, he even brought an extra worker with him. This was because there was too much stuff for him to move within 2 hours, and he had to engage an extra guy to help. The guys brought Bubble Wrap and some cloth to protect more TV, Fridge and Washing Machine.

Within 2 hours, the move was done, and it was a very very pleasant experience.

I gave the guy a tip for a job well done.

Tips on Finding a Freelance Mover

Finding a mover: Besides Easy Van, you can post ads on Carousell, Craigslist, and Gumtree to find your freelance mover. There are actually many active movers lurking around on craigslist and Gumtree, so if you want, you can get them from there.

Packing: If you want to save on packing services like I did, There are several ways to do it. You can purchase cardboard boxes from those aunties at your local area who collect cardboard, or you can buy used cardboard boxes online. Some online stores even sell bubble wrap with the cardboard boxes. However, most of the easyvan movers will be able to help you with this if you do not want to go to the trouble.(Mine did). However, they might charge you a little more for this service. You can also buy Bubble Wrap from many sources like TaoBao.

Fragile and beloved items: It’s my advice that you should never move fragile and beloved items in the same truck as your other items. If you can, try to move these yourself by your car or taxi as you do not want them squashed somewhere or something to happen to them. Otherwise, keep a close lookout that these movers know to take care of your fragile and beloved items. For me, I got a professional, specialized piano mover to move my piano. I didn’t think the movers had the expertise to do it themselves.

Some Tips on Easy Van

Before engaging your driver, do be careful to get only those drivers who have experience moving. You can refer to various information on our blog to find out more about the moving process, and ask him or her questions to make sure that they really know what they’re doing. Also, it’s better to confirm your movers a few days in advance. However, be sure to give them a call 1 or 2 days before to check if they are still coming. These guys might forget, or they might be inconsistent as they do not have a company to hold them to their promises.

That’s All!

That’s all folks. For those of you looking to save some money and try a different method of moving house, you can look to hire some freelance drivers. Do take special care to vet your drivers though!
