10 Moving Hacks To Make Moving Easier!

10 Moving Hacks To Make Moving Easier!

We’ve spoken to you before about how you can plan towards your Moving day. But often no matter how much we plan, on the day it’s definitely going to be a scurry. All your items lying everywhere but in their respective boxes, movers telling you that they’ll be there in a few hours, and all you want to do is to take a shower and sleep!

Planning smart goes with working smart, so we are going to supplement you with a bunch of very simple tips and tricks that can save your life and your sanity on moving day. Get your pen and paper ready! Or of course, you can always screenshot this page.

1) Prepare all the essentials that you need.

  • All kinds of tapes! Masking Tape, duct tape and scotch tape at the least.
  • Black or Blue permanent markers which have ink
  • Scissors, at least 2 or 3 of them, because they seem to disappear easily
  • A penknife
  • Lots and lots of old newspapers
  • All your socks and bed linen, we’ll tell you why later!
  • Cling wrap
  • A bottle of water, for you of course

2) Get your tapes rolling!

Before you sit down with your boxes and items to start packing, mark the end of each tape with a safety pin or paper clip to save yourself all the scratching around to get your tape out. It takes less than a minute to do and it’s going to save you lots of frustration later on.

3) Dismantling your furniture?

Make sure all the screws, small loose parts and the specific tools you use to assemble (like the classic Ikea screwdriver) are in a zip-lock bag and are taped to the frame of your furniture. Make sure you put a Masking Tape on top of the bag to label it clearly too, in case they drop off during the shift.

4) You don’t have to fold your clothes!

Get a plastic wrap or cling wrap and wrap up your bedroom closet with the clothes inside so it can be shifted as it is to your new home. This saves you plenty of time in trying to pack in your clothes into a clean box and then trying to put them back as they were later on.

It might also be a smart idea to remove your closet drawers to cling wrap them separately so your closet isn’t shaking around your items during the journey.

5) Do you need bubble wrap?

Our answer is no – bubble wrap for all your fragile items is going to be a huge waste of your money. And if you feel that newspaper is not enough of a protection, we have an answer for that too.

Get your socks to be stuffed in and wrapped around your glassware and use bed linen to wrap up anything big and fragile. This saves you from buying bubble wrap that is just going to be thrown away and it does the job just as well!

6) Worried about leaks?

Anything that you feel might leak: salt and pepper shakers, toiletry bottles, sauces or food items, can all be shifted safely without making a mess by using cling wrap as well. Unscrew all the bottles and put a piece of plastic wrap on the opening before screwing the lid back in. There you do, no spills!

7) How about cuts and tears?

While packing you will come across plenty of sharp items which can cut through your other stuff easily. Do yourself and your movers a favour by placing all these items, like knives and forks, in oven gloves or mittens, to keep everyone and everything else safe.

8) Wires, wires and wires

All your wires have to be set up the same way they were in your old house. The best way to do this is to use a piece of masking tape to label your wires individually, and at the same time to hold them together neatly. With this you won’t have to stand around near your television set and figure out which wire goes where!

9) More help with electronic assembling later

On top of labelling your wires, you can also take a photo of how the wires were plugged in at the back of your electronic equipment. This makes it even easier later on to set it back up.

10) What should you put in your rolling luggage?

Anything too heavy to carry of course! All your books and files which are surprisingly heavy for their size can go into your rollers rather than leaving to tear through a few boxes despite all the duct tape sealing it up.
