This Wednesday will begin operations in Dubai; the city wants 25% of its police to be robots in 2030

Two years ago the UAE Police announced that among its goals for 2017 was to have a robot that would help with the basic tasks of the department. As expected, on Monday, during the Gulf Information Security and Expo Conference, the first robotic police officer was introduced; greeted everyone and demonstrated some of his abilities. Manufactured by the Spanish company PAL Robotics and renamed REEM, it will enter into operation the night of May 24 in the city of Dubai.

It measures 1.68 meters and moves thanks to lower wheels. It has integrated a tablet in the chest that will help the interaction with the people; from there they can report crimes, pay fines for traffic violations and start paperwork for some paperwork.

REEM leans, greets, recognizes faces and gestures with hands at a distance of 1.5 meters (maximum), and is polyglot: speaks 15 languages. Although initially designed for basic tasks and not for serious crime, the Police are already developing more advanced software in collaboration with IBM Watson and Google, who will help in the future, the robot, will incorporate an artificial intelligence platform.

Although this robot is part of a pilot test, the department is confident that by 2030 25% of its workforce will be robots, and are even sure that they will be able to operate the first non-human police station.

During this first test will analyze the behavior of citizens and tourists in the presence of a robot. Many consider that the measure can affect the reliability of the state police force. Also, it is believed that some people will bother to approach one in case you want to make a complaint.
