Chef Wars Mobile Game Review (IOS/Android)

Collecting Ingredients from across the globe to create the best dishes which is Chef Wars, a game made by Mindcake which is their first ever game that they released. This game also won the google play editior’s choice which many users give very high ratings. Since this game is a food discovery RPG, this game might be a fresh change compared to other cooking games.

Design and Story

You start out as a young girl named Sylvie (The Barefoot Heiress) whose father has just passed away where he left a secret recipe somewhere around the world. Your main goal to battle against Baron Von Pork and his minions who they are replicating the secret recipe to take over the world. But as the story progresses, you will release that Sylvie also wanted to find out what really happened to her father before his death so it gets pretty interesting on what the story unfolds.

The visuals and the artwork for this game are amazing. This is the first game that has an open world experience where you can travel around the world while visiting cities/towns. There are also cooking battles where you can challenge enemy chefs for ingredients.

Gameplay

Sylvie will be given a few recipes by the tutorial. You can create more recipes in the recipe invention section where your ingredients are currently shown and you can drag the ingredients that you want to create a new dish. Creating a dish, however, has a chance to fail so the success chance is depending on the amount and correct type of ingredients placed on the pot. This makes the game very RNG-based where everything is about trial and error as losing ingredients due to failure will be very frustrating which you have to collect the same ingredients again.

Tip: As you start out, do not create many recipes at one go since every chef has a number of recipe slots so its best to create only for boss battle situations.

Each chef has its own stats where each of them can be upgraded using cash which is in-game currency or gems which are premium currency.

  • Skill – Higher the skill, the higher the performance during cooking battles
  • Creativity – Affects invention and market visits (increases chance of better ingredients from towns/cities)
  • Tenacity – Affects upgrades and market visits (increases chance of better ingredients from towns/cities)

Each chef also has its own traits which usually gains better performance on themes during cooking battles. You can also upgrade a dish using ingredients which increases the power of the dish.

Once you are ready with the dishes you can battle either bosses or other NPCs to gain experience, cash and gems other than ingredients. There will be three judges that will judge your dish with 3 themes given to you and your opponent. Your objective to match these three themes by selecting your dish. Each judge will rate your dish from 1-10 where the victor goes to the chef who has the highest overall score.

Most of the boss battles in the game are quite broken, even the earlier bosses they have a very high overall score which you will be forced to upgrade your chef stats further or create another dish which gives you an advantage.

You can visit towns where you are given an ingredient on your first visit, buy new ingredients, challenge other chefs and interact with other NPCs which gives useful tips. There are also special towns like the black market where you can buy a selection of ingredients though these are quite expensive. There is also PvP in this game where you can battle other players to obtain rewards and events although these require a higher level.

Even though it is an open world game, the map is very confusing to navigate especially for beginners. Yes, there is fast travel but if you want to collect a specific ingredient, you might find yourself lost unless you have a wiki guide along to help you.

Verdict

Don’t get me wrong, this game is a very well polished game. The idea of creating new dishes and battling against other chefs is a very good concept together with impressive visuals. However, there is so much RNG in this game together with a very confusing map navigation which makes it difficult for new players to progress further without guides.

The Good:

– Beautiful visuals

– Open world experience

– Huge number of recipes to create

The Bad:

– Bosses are broken

– Too much RNG in this game
