GM Recalls Over 1 Million Vehicles Due to Steering System Malfunction

General Motors (GM) recently announced that it will recall over 1 million of its full-size pickup trucks and SUVs due to an issue with the power steering system that could lead to crashes. According to the statement released by GM, the steering defect could cause the vehicles to lose electric power steering, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle while driving. Upon announcing the recall, GM notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a total of 30 crashes have been caused by the safety defect thus far.

In early 2017, GM also conducted a recall due to a safety defect in the ignition system of many of its vehicles. These issues have led to many of the injured victims filing GM recall lawsuits. If you have been injured in a car accident in the Providence area and feel a faulty car part may be to blame, it is important to contact an experienced car accident lawyer who may be able to file a Providence car accident lawsuit on your behalf.

What is a Safety-Related Defect?

Generally speaking, a safety defect is defined as a problem that exists in a motor vehicle or vehicle part that poses a risk to vehicle safety and may exist in a group of vehicles of the same design or manufacture, or items of equipment of the same type and manufacture. Examples of defective vehicle parts include defective steering parts, engine problems, dangerous seating systems or faulty brakes, defective seat belts that fail unexpectedly during normal use.

Other examples can include faulty airbags and seat restraint systems that fail to protect vehicle occupants during a crash. Child safety seats that contain faulty parts such as buckles or components that create a risk of injury or fail to protect a child in the event of a crash are also considered defective.

How do You Know if Your Vehicle Has Been Recalled?

You can find out if your vehicle is part of a safety recall by visiting NHTSA’s website at safercar.gov and entering your vehicle identification number (VIN). If your vehicle is part of a recall, you should contact the appropriate dealership and make arrangements for it to be fixed as soon as possible.

The vehicles currently being recalled by GM include the following:

  • 2015 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2015 Chevrolet Silverado
  • 2015 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2015 GMC Sierra
  • 2015 GMC Yukon
