How to Cancel Your Online Dating Account

Tags: account cancel

So, you’ve given a new online dating site a try, and it’s just not for you? Or, maybe you’ve found that special someone, and it’s time to close out the searching chapter of your life (congrats if that’s you!). Either way, you’re most likely here because you want to Cancel your online dating Account, but you can’t figure out how.

We’re here to help. It’s important that you cancel your online dating account for a lot of reasons. One – if you’re paying for a membership you don’t want it to auto-renew and charge you again for a service you don’t need. Two – if you’ve found that special someone, you don’t want to keep getting emails from potential suitors or have one of their friends tell them they saw you online still.

If you need to cancel your online dating account, follow the next few steps and tips we have laid out for you.

Where do I go to cancel my online dating account?

While all online dating site cancellation processes are going to be a little different, there are some common places that you can most likely find what you’re looking for. We’ve ranked those below in order of where you are most likely to find them.

1. Check in your account preferences or settings.

Most likely in the top right-hand area of the home screen, you’ll see some sort of a drop-down menu. You may have to click on your account name or a little down arrow or something like that. When you do this, you’re going to see a menu that has your account preferences or your settings. Within one of those options is where you are most likely going to find where to cancel your online dating account.

It might not be labeled “Cancel account” or something convenient like that. This is either because the developer didn’t think this through or maybe the dating site doesn’t want to make it easy to cancel your account. Here are some things it could be labeled:

  • Update Subscription
  • Subscription Status
  • Membership Details
  • Account Status
  • Your Account

Those are just a few examples of how it might be listed. Basically, anything that has the word subscription or account with it is what you’re looking for here. When you find that section, look for something with the word cancel in it. You’ll need to click the option and most likely click the ‘Save’ or ‘Submit’ button. MAKE SURE that you submit or save the details. If you don’t do this, your account is probably not going to be canceled.

You should also get some sort of confirmation. We’ll discuss exactly what you’re looking for and what to do if you don’t get confirmation in the tips section below.

2. Check in your billing information section.

If you can’t find how to cancel your online dating account in any of the sections we talked about above, your next stop needs to be looking for your billing information. This will almost always be titled ‘Billing’ or something like that. Again, this may be in that menu in the upper right, or it could be across the top of the screen or possibly in the footer. Basically, look around the outer edges of your member homepage for the billing tab.

When you get there, you’ll most likely see a way to update your payment information and your billing address. You should also see a place to update your subscription status or cancel your account. It will be one of those two, and it should be there if it weren’t somewhere that we listed in the first section of this guide.

Once you find it, follow the same steps we gave you earlier to make sure your dating account gets canceled. You MUST save or submit the information, and you must get some form of confirmation. Again, we will cover this step in more detail in the tips section at the bottom of the guide.

3. Contact customer support (if you have time).

If the above does not work, then it’s time to reach out to customer service. A lot of times online dating sites will tell you that it is your responsibility to cancel, but they have to at least tell you where and how to do that. To make things easy on you, we’ve put together a form email that you can copy and paste and send to your online dating site’s customer support. There should be a contact form on the site, or you can just Google the site’s name and customer service email. That should return something for you.

Hello,

I am writing because I want to cancel my online dating account effective immediately. Please change my subscription so that auto-renew is turned off and I will not be billed again.

My username is ___________ and the email address associated with my account is _______________.

Thank you,

((YOUR NAME))

If you want them to delete your account completely when they cancel it, you can request that in the email as well.

Remember, a lot of online dating sites have live customer service help that you can reach out to as well if you’d like. If you do that, just tell them exactly what we said above and they should be able to help you. Make sure you have your username or at least the email you used to create your account handy so that they can identify who you are.

There’s a chance that the online dating site will just email you back instructions on how to cancel your account. While we’d prefer that they do it for you, we can understand why some companies choose to do this. If they do, just follow the instructions that they sent you and you should be good to go.

If you use this route, MAKE SURE that you get some sort of confirmation email or confirmation number from the live support agent. You should also write down when you called or chatted and who you spoke with. This will help you in the event that there is a problem with your cancelation and the site tries to charge you again for no reason.

Tips to Help You When Canceling Your Online Dating Account

Hopefully, the above methods to cancel your online dating account go smoothly, and you have no problems. That being said, we do want to give you some tips to help make sure the process goes smoothly, and you protect yourself in the event that there is a problem in the future. We have heard a few stories of people thinking that they got their online dating account canceled, only to find out that there was a problem and they were charged again. Some of them got their money back, and some did not.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

If you don’t want to be charged again, don’t risk waiting until the last minute to try and get your online dating account canceled. It might take the site a few days to process your cancelation which is usually covered in their terms of service. It may also take you a little while to find where to cancel your account which could push you over the deadline. Most of the time, this responsibility is going to fall on you, and you won’t get a refund.

Cancel your online dating account well ahead of time if you are not interested in renewing. Almost every dating site out there will still let you use the remainder of the time you paid for even after you cancel. So, if you wanted to, you could actually cancel your account the second after you sign up and you’ll still get the full duration of what you paid for.

Realize Your Account Will Not be Deleted

When you cancel your online dating account, your information and profile are not going to be deleted. This may be a good thing or a bad thing for you depending on why you want to cancel. If you are canceling because you need a break or are not sure if you want to renew or not, this is a good thing. All of your messages and everything else will be stored by the site for an extended period of time. That way if you decide to join again, you can pick back up right where you left off.

But, if you’re canceling because you’ve found love, this might not be a positive. You’ll want to inquire further about how to get your account completely deleted. Spoiler, they don’t make this easy, and some sites won’t even let you do it. You’ll need to go in and just delete everything manually in those situations. Delete your pictures, profile answers, etc. and you should be good to go. You’ll still technically have an account on there, but nothing will be searchable or public for anyone to see.

Get a Confirmation of Some Sort For Your Records

For the love of everything holy, please make sure that you get some sort of confirmation that your cancelation has gone through. AND! Make sure that you hang onto this cancelation confirmation for at least a few weeks after the end of your membership term.

Why? Glad you asked. If for some reason the online dating site tries to improperly charge you (which has and does happen), you need to be able to prove to them that you canceled your account. This should be plenty to get them to reverse the charge and give you your money back. If they won’t give you your money back and you have confirmation, you can take them to court, and you will win. But, we really don’t think it would ever come to that; they’ll give you your money back in the off chance that they accidentally charge you.

Where to Go Next

If you’re canceling your dating account because you found love, you know where to go next. But, if you’re canceling because the site wasn’t a good fit, then you’re probably on the lookout for a site that is more fitting. Online dating can be great, but only if you’re at a dating site that fits you and what you’re looking for.

We have two places that we recommend you check out. First, check out one of our top 10 dating sites. These are the best of the best and could be a great fit for you.
