Promotions and discounts are effective ways to increase sales of your Magento 2 ecommerce store. There are two ways you can add promotional offers to your online store – adding Catalog price rules and adding shopping cart rules.

We’ve previously discussed how to add shopping cart rules (creating coupon codes).

In this tutorial, you’ll how to add catalog price rules in Magento 2. Adding a new catalog price rule involves following steps:

  • Step 1: Add New Catalog Price Rules
  • Step 2: Specify Rule Information
  • Step 3: Set Rule Conditions
  • Step 4: Set Rule Actions
  • Step 5: Apply New Rule to Store Website

Step 1: Add New Catalog Price Rules

To add a new catalog price rule, go to Marketing => Catalog Price Rule (under Promotions)

You’ll see the Catalog Price Rule page. If you’ve not added a price rule before, you’ll see this list empty. In our example, we’ve already added a price rule which is displayed in the list.

Click on the Add New Rule button to start adding a new rule.

Step 2: Specify Rule Information

When you click on the Add New Rule button, you’re taken to the New Catalog Price Rule form.

You’ll need to specify the following rule information:

  • Rule Name: Type in a descriptive name for your new price rule.
  • Description: Type in the description for your new price rule. This description is for your reference only and will not be displayed to your customers.
  • Status: You can set the status of your new price rule to “Active” or “Inactive”
  • Websites: If you’ve multiple websites, select which website you want the price rule to apply to.
  • Customer Groups: Select which customer groups can take benefit of your new price rule. You can set this setting to:
    • NOT LOGGED IN
    • General
    • Wholesale
    • Retailer
  • From: Set the start date for your promotional offer.
  • To: Set the end date for your promotional offer.
  • Priority: Set priority for your new price rule. This is helpful when you’ve multiple offers running on your store. You want Magento to prioritize which price rule you want to apply for a specific product. Set this to ‘0’ to set the priority to highest.

Step 3: Set Rule Conditions

Once you’re done filling in the general rule information, click on Conditions tab from the left sidebar.

Click on the PLUS button to add a new condition:

For our example, we’ll select Category attribute. When you click on an attribute to set conditions, a new field appears with attribute values:

Select the attribute values you want to apply the rule for. For our example, we’ve selected Women category and Tops subcategory.

You can further add conditions by click on the green plus button and following the same process.

You can also set whether you want all or any of these conditions to be true.

Quick Tip: If you don’t add conditions, the price rule will apply to all the products in your website.

Step 4: Set Rule Actions

Once you’re done setting conditions for your new price rule, click on the Actions tab from the left sidebar.

You’ll need to set the following pricing structure rules:

  • Apply: Set which action you want to apply to all the products that match rule information and conditions you’ve set in Step 2 and Step 3. You can set this field to:
    • Apply as percentage of original: Use this option if you want the discount to be applied as a percentage of the product price. For example, if your product price is $50 and you set the discount amount to 10%, the final price after discount will be $45.
    • Apply as fixed amount: Use this option if you want to provide a flat discount. For example, if your product price is $50 and you set the discount amount to 10, the final price after discount will be $40.
    • Adjust final price to this percentage: Use this option if you want to set the final price to a percentage of the product price. For example, if your product price is $50 and you set the discount amount to 10%, then final price after discount will be $5.
    • Adjust final price to discount value: Use this option if you want to offer a flat price. The amount you set as the discount amount will be the final price of the product, irrespective of the original product price.
  • Discount Amount: This is the section where you’ll set the discount amount. All the above options will calculate the final price depending on this amount.
  • Subproduct discounts: You can set whether you want the discount to be applied to associated products. When you set this option to “Yes”, two new fields appear: Set the Apply action and Discount Amount for the subproducts like we did for the main catalog price rule.
  • Discard subsequent rules: What if there are other price rules which match the same conditions that you’ve set for this price rule? You can discard the additional rules so that multiple discounts are not applied to the same product purchase.

Once you’ve filled in the information for Actions tab, click on the Save button to save the new catalog price rule.

Step 5: Apply New Rule to Store Website

When you save the new price rule, it will appear in the Catalog Price Rule page.

You’ll be prompted to update your catalog. Click on the Apply Rules button to apply the new catalog price rule.
