What Not To Do In a Job Interview? Please Don’t Do These 10 Things

For many years I had the opportunity to interrogate hundreds of candidates for work . I have seen and heard things that could shock you and which you would not expect to see in a job Interview. So I prepared a list of things that should not be done during a job interview.

What Not To Do In a Job Interview?

1. Do not talk about salary, holidays, health package, etc. during the first job interview.

These are tricky topics, so what if the employer can get them out? The general rule is this: do not just pick up the subject of pay and other additional benefits. If the employer takes up the topic, there are two possible answer options. If you are asked at the beginning of a Conversation about the amount of your salary, you can say something like: “I would rather find out more about working in this position before I can determine what amount would be satisfactory for me” or you can enter a range in which there is an interesting you amount. For example, I do not like to commit to a specific number. The numerical range gives both sides a view on the amount of remuneration and leaves room for possible subsequent negotiations.

Often during an interview you will be given an average salary for a given position. If the recruiter asks you if this amount suits you (and it will be satisfying to you), you can say that it is in your range. Negotiating remuneration is okay, but it should not be done during the first job interview. Most experts recommend that you avoid this topic during the initial conversation and leave it for possible later meetings. When at the end of the conversation you are asked if you have any questions for the recruiter, do not ask him for additional benefits, health package, etc. He may then think that you are interested only in benefits and not in a specific position.

2. Do not say ANYTHING wrong with yourself, colleagues, previous employers, competition, do not admit to financial or personal problems.

Do not emphasize your desperation in trying this position. Do you remember your approach to the desperate who wanted to make an appointment with you?

3. Do not answer yes to the offer of coffee or tea.

The drink can spill and cause unnecessary confusion.

4. Refrain from criticizing your previous employer.

This is a very common behavior among candidates. I think they feel trapped by hearing the question why they gave up their previous job. Even if there were scams in the company, the friend was promoted because she slept with the boss, the manager used mobbing and the boss harassed you sexually – your new employer does not want to hear it. If you speak wrong about your previous boss, your potential employer will assume that you will be criticized as well. So bite your tongue and say something like: “I am looking for a job that will give me the opportunity to develop, promote or earn better” , “The new management has restructured the company and I was released”or”The company collapsed because of the crisis”. Just tell the truth. If something bad happened to you and you were forced to leave, it is obvious that you will be looking for a new job.

5. Do not gossip or tell jokes.

An interview is not a good opportunity to pour jokes, even if they are related to the position you are applying for.

6. Do not put a briefcase, handbag, briefcase or backpack on the employer’s desk .

You violate his personal space in this way and break the professional label. It’s the same as if you came to a stranger’s house and put your feet on the table.

7. Do not argue with a potential employer , even if you are sure you are right.

This is a sign of bad education.

8. Do not chew gum or smoke while talking to the recruiters.

This indicates the lack of professionalism.

9. Do not use profanity during a conversation.

It is completely unprofessional and may result in interruption of the conversation and turning of the candidate.

10. Do not bring your boyfriend, friend or children to a conversation.

This is very undesirable behavior. I once interviewed a candidate who brought his entire family to a conversation – seven very loud people. Try to imagine what we thought about him.
