The determination of competitive children at play, little ones in mid-laughter and certain family members trying to reign everyone in a little are all classic party games images to take.

The main event

Having spent some time choosing the birthday Cake, or even making it yourself, you’ll want plenty of photos that show it pre-demolition. Pinterest has some great ideas for getting the best cake photography shots.

Also, you can’t forget the main event of blowing out the candles – what would a birthday party be without this? You might opt for trick candles to get a giggle from the crowd, or simply go for normal candles that your little one can blow out to the cheer of party goers. Enlist another family member or friend in helping to light the candles and lead the happy birthday song while you get in position to capture the moment as it happens.

A slower shutter speed will help you to catch every millisecond of the action so you can be sure of a killer photograph.

Cake smash fun

For the very little ones, a Cake Smash Photoshoot is new levels of cuteness. You’ll need two cakes for the big event – one for eating and one for smashing…

If you don’t mind the mess, you can put your child in their finest for the cake smash or even just in their nappy for some care-free fun. All you need is a nice white background, your cake on a little stand ready for smashing and a picnic blanket or something underneath to try to catch the flying bits of sponge and frosting!
