Australia, N. Zealand open food markets

Australia and New Zealand opened their markets for hemp foods today with a go-ahead from a bilateral Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation. The approval makes foods from the hemp seed legal for human consumption beginning this November.

Legislation that still makes illegal the sale of low-THC hemp seeds as food will be amended in some states and territories, Ministers noted in a statement that came out of the Forum.

Ministers also agreed to set up an Implementation and Monitoring working group for the hemp industry. The battle to get hemp food products on the market in Australia dates to 2002.
