I expect there are different ways to spell the word.
To me Kafir is a word Muhammad used when he observed farmers sowing seeds and covering them, so Kafir describe’s those people who are ‘concealing or covering up’ the truth about Islam. Muhammad thought everyone should be Muslim, so those who did not accept Islam got the title Kaffir or Kafir.
