Obama’s broken promises . . .

I have heard Republicans say that Obama broke some of the promises he made when he ran the first time for the Presidency.  Were some of the promises broken?  Well, let’s put that in proper perspective.  If I make you a Promise I will show up for an appointment, and I don’t show, you could say I broke my promise.  However, if the San Francisco 49ers defense showed up and wouldn’t let me pass to our meeting, I might have a damn good reason that I was unable to make our meeting.  Obama met the Congressional equivalent of that defensive line.  Mitch McConnell, (R) Kentucky, Minority Leader of the U.S. Senate whose self-stated imperative of making Obama a one-term President, made that abundantly clear on a video.

Presidents do not make laws.  They can propose them, and Congress votes on them and if passed, they send it to the President to get the laws signed or vetoed.  If anything, President Obama is only guilty of not being prescient that the Republicans would stand in his way of making any headway on any of his promises.  The logic, as I see it, goes this way.  The Republicans, would make him break his promises, and then he would be a one-term President, because they could point out that he did, in fact, break his promises.

Obama further wanted to be “bipartisan” and get both sides of the aisle to vote on things.  How naive of him!  To think the Republicans would put the good of the country over their idea of defeating Obama in the next election.  Why do you think the jobless rate is so high?

Every time that Obama and his team came up with something to help the economy, it is voted down, just so that the Republicans can get their guy in office before 2016.

Now, I have a question.  What if Mitt Romney wins the Presidency, and the Democrats in congress pull a “Mitch McConnell” and decide to make him a one-termer?  Where will the country be?

I say to elect Obama for a second term.  He will be a “lame duck” as President.  He can’t be elected again.  The incentive to fight him will wither, and maybe some good governing will actually take place.  Economists have said that no matter who is in the White House, the economy will expand by 12 million jobs over several years.  To keep Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid working like they do now for seniors, we can’t elect Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan and the Ryan Budget.

One last word: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan say to trust them to turn the economy around.  They won’t tell us how they intend to do it.  They aren’t making any promises, so there is no way they can break them.  It is a good way to assure a second term.  Let’s make sure they don’t have a first term.
