Was Hawking’s a meritorious student of his school?

Today, we know him as a brilliant scientist but he was a mediocre student in his school days. In fact, at one stage he was having lowest grades in his class and worked hard to come among average students.

But, he was curious by nature and his teachers were having an idea of his genius mind. Instead of his poor grades, he was nicknamed as “Einstein”

Though he was an average student but his father wanted him to study in Oxford but didn’t have money to pay his fee. Surprisingly, this mediocre school boy aced the scholarship exam of Oxford and took admission there. Report says he got almost perfect score in the physics portion of scholarship test.

Biology was descriptive and inexact for Hawking.

Like all parents, Hawking’s father also wanted him to study medicine to become a doctor. But, hawking was interested in precise and specific knowledge of Mathematics. He never liked Biology as for him this subject is having several things which are inexact.

Though Hawking wanted to study Mathematics, but in Oxford maths was not available as major and he compromised with Physics as his major subject.

Ups and Downs of Personal Life of Hawking

In 1962, at the age of 21, he was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and as per prediction of doctors he could survive only two to five years. But, he did not accept defeat and continued his Ph.D. work. Slowly disease began to break down his neurological pathways, but did not affect his mind.  With the time he became wheel chair restricted and lost the speech ability but he could communicate with the world by making control over his limbs and body functions and use speech synthesiser.

Hawking knew that he may not survive long, so he lived his life fullest and made use of every minute without wasting it in making excuse.

Hawking wrote several best-selling books. His first book, “A Brief History of Time” was published in 1988 and became an international best seller. Hawking also wrote for school children. He was co-author of George’s Secret Key to the Universe with his Lucy Hawking. The book is a fiction story of George, a young boy, who rebels against his parents’ aversion to technology.
