FairVote Ranked-Choice Voting in 2018

Here are just a few FairVote developments that show just what exciting Reform Opportunities are Unfolding in 2018.

STATES

San Francisco (CA) on June 5th will use RCV in a hotly contested Mayoral Race will once again showcase RCV. FairVote California is doing important Analysis, Outreach, and Education.

Santa Clara (CA) on June 5th will Vote on whether to back a Charter Amendment to Enact RCV for Mayor and other Key City Offices, including the Multi-Winner, Fair Representation Form of RCV ("Single Transferable Vote") for the City Council in Three-Winner Districts. This would be the First Adoption of this form of RCV for a City Council since the 1950s. The FairVote California Team, Jennifer Pae, Pedro Hernandez, and Margaret Okuzumi, are an ongoing Resource to Santa Clara Reformers

Maine will Vote on Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV) on June 12th, 2018, affirming the "people's veto that would overturn the Oct. 2017 Law and Restore RCV for use in All Primary and All US Senate/House Elections, including this November, and with RCV, using it for all Primaries in June, including crowded Primaries for both Major Parties in the Governor's Race. There's a strong Maine Campaign to Win the Referendum and, separately, a strong Educational effort to help RCV go well. See a Editorial in the State's Largest Paper framing the Issue and good Coverage this week in Vox by Reform Allies. FairVote will be a Resource to Mainers and work Nationally to tell their inspiring story and draw attention to how Maine is Leading in June with the best way to enable more than Two Choices at the Polls.

Santa Fe (NM) is gearing up for its first-ever use of RCV in a Five-Candidate Race for an Open Mayoral Seat on March 6th in the wake of a Lawsuit Win to keep the City on track with Implementing RCV. Maria Perez and FairVote New Mexico are doing a great job helping to introduce RCV to Voters, and Candidates have adapted well to the New System.

State Legislation has been introduced in States in every corner of the Country. Just in the last week, important Bills that would allow Cities to use RCV passed out of Committees with Bipartisan support in Utah and Virginia.

FiarVote will work with a growing Network of State groups doing remarkable work, including in Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Nevada, where All were Represented at FairVote's Reformers Summit last November.

The Fair Representation Act

H. R. 3057 To establish the use of Ranked-Choice Voting in Elections for Representatives in Congress, to require each State with more than One Representative to establish Multi-Member Congressional Districts, to require States to Conduct Congressional Redistricting through Independent Commissions, and for other purposes.

H. R. 3057 continues to draw Support as a Beacon of Hope for those who want a truly Representative and Accountable U.S. House of Representatives effectively Free of Gerrymandering. FairVote issues regular Reports and Analysis that Showcase this Reform.

Check-Out FairVote for their Our Voices and Choices Blog that has a great New Look, and much-expanded Content, including a Regular Contribution on Gerrymandering from Senior Fellow David Daley and a Podcast series being launched this Month. Daley and the rest of the FairVote Team are also regularly Speaking around the Country, including in the past week at Providence College, the Unrig Democracy Summit in New Orleans, and in Invitation-Only Meeting among Dozens of Members of Congress.
