As accident victim begged for help, people stole his belongings
18 Aug 2017
  • Cases of apathy in India have been reported frequently in recent times. But the latest episode case is so much worse.
  • In Delhi, an injured accident victim lay on the roadside for 12 hours, begging for help. Instead, some decided to steal his phone, cash and even a measly Rs. 12 that had fallen out of his pocket.
  • The tale is disturbing indeed.

  • On I-Day, the victim was hit by a speeding car
    Accident
  • Narender Kumar was hit by a car when he was crossing the road near Kashmere Gate in the evening of August 15.
  • His spine was injured and he couldn't move. "People stopped to look at me. I pleaded for help, but they didn't care."
  • Narender wasn't bleeding and remained conscious the entire time. "People thought I must have been drunk," he said later.

  • Instead of helping, people looted him
    Extreme apathy
  • Meanwhile, a man came and took away his bag which had Rs. 15,000 cash. Another picked up his mobile phone.
  • One offered him water but didn't call for assistance. Two others appeared willing to help, but said they didn't have phones and left.
  • Ironically, Kashmere Gate is one of the busiest spots in Delhi with an ISBT and a metro station in the vicinity.

  • The victim is lucky to survive
    Status
  • Narender finally got help when police arrived at 5am next morning. He was taken to Sushruta Trauma Centre and then to Safdurjung Hospital.
  • He received injuries in his neck, legs and spine, but is out of danger.
  • At least Narender survived. Last year, an e-rickshaw driver bled to death on a Delhi road after an accident. No one came to help for 90 minutes.
