Everything you need to know about moonrocks.

Discovering Moonrocks is a little like your first sip of chilled champagne on a sunny day, or that exquisite taste of the first chocolate from a Brussel’s Chocolatier. There’s a great advert for a dispensary product which shows moonrocks as being marijuana’s latest – and implied, best – evolutionary development. So what are moonrocks – and are they really that good?

What are moonrocks?

Despite what you might think, moonrocks are NOT a new strain of cannabis. They get their name from the very lumpy, rock-like shape that results when you take a bud, dip it in cannabis oil, then roll it lightly in Kief.Smoking the end result is a superb blend of the three different effects, a harmonizing combination which takes getting high to a new and more sophisticated level. Sometimes its called cannabis caviar which implies both the expense and delicacy of the end product. Don’t get confused with MDMA crystals which can also be called moonrocks – you’ll get a completely different hit from that purchase!

Where did the idea of moonrocks come from?

Noone’s quite sure who first came up with the idea, but thanks to marketing, history will probably claim that cannabis entrepeneur Kurupt invented them with his trademarked product “Kurupt’s Moonrock”. Actually people have been smoking the same blend of bud oil and kief rolled in a single joint for special occasions for years.

How to make your own moonrocks:

If you have easy access to the 3 ingredients, making your own moonrocks is simplicity itself. If you’re a personal grower looking to try something more creative with your end product, assembling these parts is going to be a little more difficult.

What you need to make cannabis moonrocks:

• Tight compact buds.
  • We recommend using the top third of each bud, weighing about 0.5g. Use only the very very bestest most potent weed you can lay your hands on.
• Kief. – the pollen or dry sift you get when you shake your weed and trim.

Use a sifting box like this one to collect trichomes from your bud when trimming.

• Hash Oil, Cannabis Oil or Butane Honey Oil.
  • We’ve used cannabis oil as we frequently make it for medical members of our local Cannabis Association. The process is however time consuming, requires equipment, and can be dangerous. For this purpose you can use a BHO made quite simply using a HoneyBee Extractor. BHO Wax makes for the smoothest most flavoursome effect,
• small brush or syringe
• tweezers
• small pyrex or silicon dish and a larger container

You can mix and match your strains, pairing an Indica bud with a Sativa based kief etc. The possibilities and combinations are endless!

How to use moonrocks

Just the same way as you usually would. Don’t put in a grinder though as you will shake off any loose kief – cut with a clean knife instead or crumble directly over the rolling paper. We prefer using a clean pipe, and no tobacco in order not to taint the georgous flavours. You only need a little of each rock per pipe and the uplifting buzz lasts for hours. Moonrocks might be expensive to make but they are great value for money.

How strong are moonrocks?

You’ll often see confused maths about the THC% in a moonrock. And every batch will be different depending on its components. But lets say you have 0.5g of bud at 15% THC, 0.25g of oil at 80% THC and 50% THC in 0.25g of kief and you’ll see that the total amount of THC /g is 40%. But its not just about the THC, its the combination of the other cannabinoids and terpenes that gives moonrocks their full flavour and effect.
