Secondary Optics - Week 4

Secondary Optics often get a bad name due to the fallacy of information being provided. The common misconception is that adding a Secondary optic reduces power. Last week we went over coverage and how optics play a large role in directing the light spread into a focused beam for your grow area. While not every grow light company uses a secondary optic, at advanced we strive for the best results for your plants and this is why we use Secondary Optics.

Have a look at our video. Enjoy!

While there is some basis on the reduction of power anytime a lens is put in front of an LED, This is not accounting for all of the new power you directed into your grow light area; giving you higher PAR and penetration. Just like a garden hose, focusing the power into a smaller area results in a much stronger stream of water. Light works much the same way, except instead of the nozzle causing the increase in pressure, the lens is increasing the Intensity by redirecting the unused light from the sides.

Not every optic is the same, however, finding an optic that gives great coverage. but still gives you the punch and intensity can be tricky. Optics behave very different depending on which LED light it is being used on, the intensity of the LED, and even the spectrum of the LED. At advanced we have extensively tested a plethora of optics to ensure the best performance and efficiency. While many newer Led Grow lights started picking up on secondary optics, it is important to make sure you have an even spread without sacrificing intensity; as we mentioned in our previous “PAR, Watts, and Mass PAR” video. We hope this explained a bit about how secondary optics function and their use in the LED grow light industry.
