Ekor Kuching Lycopodium Fern

Ekor Kuching Lycopodium Fern from Malaysia. I grew ferns like this over 10 years ago and some of them are still quite healthy. These kind of ferns can be found around Malaysia but mostly in the mid highlands or east coast of Malaysia. There are a few species of this Lycopodium Squarrosum which is locally called Ekor Kuching or Cats Tail. While some people also call them Ekor Tupai (Squirrels Tail), they are usually sold in small bunches. The larger matured bunches can cost in the hundreds of ringgit from dealers at plant nurseries in the city.

Lycopodium Squarrosum or Tassel Fern (Ekor Kuching) in Malaysia

One of the way to buy these ferns cheap is while driving along the old trunk roads in Malaysia to Cameron Highlands or Terengganu, you may see some locals selling them by the roadsides. Some of the ferns I have managed to get during my trips are Tali Kasut or Shoe String Fern and Staghorn Tanduk Rusa Fern. You have the option of bargaining with the vendors for your price. The Lycopodium Squarrosum or Tassel Fern is a beautiful fern which needs shaded care. Do not expose the plant to direct sunlight. Watering of these ekor kuching are also limited. Do not over water the ferns or they will drown out and die. Best care is putting them under shade and watering them every other day. Plant them in coconut fiber too. Do not use any modern fertilizers on them too. These also grow in Borneo, Indonesia and also Thailand. Due to the heat wave a couple of years ago, most of my plants died and I only have one more Ekor Kuching Lycopodium Fern left in my care.
