Replace Your Wired Doorbell with a Ring Video Doorbell – Step by Step Instructions

Are you away from home a lot for business or other reasons? Do you want to know when someone is at your door even if you are away from home? Now you can, with the Ring Video Doorbell. The Ring video doorbell is a revolutionary gadget that allows you to get instant notifications to your smartphone and see a live video feed of everything that is happening in front of your front door, no matter how far you may be.

How Does It Work?

Once installed, your Ring video doorbell will serve as both a regular doorbell, making sounds when someone is at the door, but also, as it will be connected to your wireless internet connection, will use the smartphone application to send you notifications and live video feed every time someone rings your doorbell.

There are many ways in which Ring will benefit you. Other than being away from home, you might simply be resting at home in your bedroom, when someone comes and rings the bell. You can now take a quick glance through your smartphone and once you see its just some annoying retailers, you can choose to ignore it altogether. Speaking in general, Ring is a fantastic way to add some security to your home and keep track of your front door at any time.

Replace Your Wired Doorbell with a Ring Video Doorbell – Step by Step Instructions

Most people who decide to install a Ring video doorbell will already have a wired doorbell at their front door. If you are replacing the existing wired doorbell, the first thing you will want to do is go through the entire setup process in the mobile app that comes with Ring. This will be required to make the doorbell work properly once installed.

Next up, you will want to install the doorbell itself. This process will require a power drill and a minimal amount of handy work, which pretty much anyone can do. First up, you will want to switch off the power to your doorbell and remove the old wired doorbell.

Once the old doorbell is removed, you will want to mount the orange level that comes with the Ring doorbell and place it inside the mounting bracket as seen on the screenshot below. Place the mounting bracket next to the wall and mark the four holes you will want to drill in order to set up the new doorbell. You will want to have the bubble in the middle of the level completely steady before marking the four holes.

The next step will be drilling the holes for the screws of or the screw anchors. If you are drilling wood, screws alone will be sufficient. If however, you need to drill through a masonry surface like brick, you will need to drill holes to insert anchors into. Both the drill bit and the anchors are provided with the Ring doorbell, so the process should be fairly simple.

Insert the anchors into the drilled holes with your fingers or a hammer if necessary and use the provided screws to secure the mounting bracket in place. Make sure you don’t bend the bracket and once you have it fixed in place, simply remove the orange level as it is no longer necessary.

There will now be two wires running through the middle of the mounting bracket. Attach each of the wires to one of the two screws in the middle front of the bracket. It does not matter which wire goes to which screw, as long as they are both well fixed and wrapped around the screws. Also make sure that the wires are not touching one another.

Now that you have set up the two wires, you will need to find out whether your door chime is mechanical or digital. This is important because a digital chime will require an installation of an extra diode while the mechanical will not. The simple way to find out is by listening to your chime. If it is making a classical ding-dong sound or something similar, it is likely your doorbells is mechanical. If however, your chime makes some kind of a melody like birds chirping or a song melody, the chime is digital.

The diode is only to be used with a digital door chime, and not the mechanical one as the mechanical chime may be damaged by the diode. Installing the diode is simple enough. Position the black plastic housing in the middle of the mounting bracket and wrap the wire at each end around the screws.

Once the diode is firmly in place, you can move forward and position the Ring doorbell over the slots on the brackets and it should fit perfectly. Once it is in place, screw the screws at the bottom of the doorbell and tighten them.

Once the doorbell is firmly in place, you can switch the power to the doorbell back on and the circle in the middle of the Ring doorbell should start glowing white. A push on the button will now trigger the chime and the Ring will be perfectly set up.

Once all is installed, you will be ready to begin using your Ring video doorbell. The doorbell will now be fully functional and using the smartphone app, you will be able to get notifications straight to your phone every time someone rings the bell as well as monitor the live video feed through the camera installed on the Ring.

In order to be able to fully use the Ring video doorbell, you will need an active Wi-Fi connection and a smartphone that can support the Ring app. While both of these things are available to most people nowadays, make sure you have these before you order the Ring as you won’t be able to fully utilize it without these two.

Most mobile devices can be used to install the Ring app, as iPhones, Android devices and Blackberries should have no issues with the app. If you are unsure about any of the details, you may contact Ring support 24/7 for more details and help with any problems you are experiencing or any questions you have.

Conclusion

You should now have all the information needed to install and put into use your very own Ring video doorbell. Once this gadget is installed, your home should be a more secure place and give you more options of keeping track of what’s going on at home while you are gone.

You will now be able to keep track of all movement at your front door, whether you are on a business trip, at the pool behind the house or upstairs in your bedroom having some rest. No matter what the situation, you will never have to miss another house guest again or open the door for any unwanted guests.
