Over the last few years, we’ve made significant strides in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) game. And before your mind flashes directly to robotics, that’s only one very small application that AI could be applied to.
A lot of people view intelligent machines as something that belongs to science fiction. If you’re one of them, you need to start changing your viewpoint.
AI is now a science fact. Yes, we’re not at the level where we have machines that are as advanced as Commander Data in Star Trek, but we’re not as far off as you might like to believe.
We’d be willing to bet that you probably used AI yourself today. Scoff if you like, but if you ran a Google search or asked your virtual assistant to do something for you, you used AI. Both use AI as part of their fundamental programming.

It goes a lot further than simple background applications, though. Have you IM’d a business recently? There’s a good chance that if you used instant chat you ended up chatting to an intelligent bot. And while we’d like to think that we could tell if we were talking to a bot, the truth is that you probably won’t.
You can tell for sure if you’re asking some complex questions. When a bot cannot answer a question, it will refer it to a human being. But for simple cases, the bot’s response will be the same as a human’s. In a few years time, you won’t be able to tell the difference at all.
It’s true that AI is being used to help us make our day to day lives better. Now, granted, that has been the promise of all Tech that has gone before. And in some cases, like with a washing machine, the tech has improved our workloads.
Not all tech advances have been so good for us, though. The mobile phone, for example, was meant to make things a lot easier. And in some ways it has. It’s easier to look up things online, check your emails, and so on. It’s also easier for your boss to get hold of you whenever she likes.
With AI, though, things are a little different. Computers could handle everything from planning to execution. AI could be the best time-saving tech we’ve come up with.
