Continuing our search for the best abodes and accommodations on the planet, our next stop takes us to northern Sweden and the treetops of Åsberget mountain. Welcome to Bergaliv Landscape Hotel and The Loft House, a 33-feet tall stilted structure situated on a former ski slope.

Made from a mix of heart-pine and spruce, the Bergaliv Hotel is the first of four planned getaways on the hillside of Åsberget mountain. The 33-feet tall abode is constructed in two stories, 14 sqm each in size. The lower is a fairly standardised room which has been designed to resemble the surrounding forest in which it resides.

But the upper floor is where things get special. Walk up the stairs and you’ll find a roofed outdoor space with stripped back walls, offering an uninterrupted view over the stunning Scandinavian alley below. As well as giving spectacular views, the top floor of the Bergaliv is intended to express a ‘closeness to nature […] providing a sanctuary and a peaceful vantage point for the visitors.’

In attempt to blend in with the surrounding nature, Bergaliv is constructed from a heart pine and organically treated spruce wood framework that continues through the building revealing itself again up on the loft. Inside, birch plywood and ash dominate, while the walls are insulated with flax fibres according to old Nordic building traditions.

The interior of the house is as minimalistic as you’d expect from a wooden Scandinavian settling too. Cabin-like in feel, Bergaliv is intended ‘to clear the room from unnecessary noise and at the same time invite light and space.’ There aren’t any king-size beds here either, with humble futon mattresses that can be hung on the wall offered instead.
