Google Home Can Make Phone Calls In The UK!

Earlier this month Google announced that the Google Home speakers can finally start to make phone calls in the UK. The US have had this feature since last August so it’s taken a while to come over to us poor Brits, but finally it is here.

You can basically use this in two ways – firstly you can ask Home to call up anyone in your Google Contacts list by simple asking “call John Barnes” for example, but, perhaps cooler than that, you can use google assistant to find numbers for you, so for example saying “call my closest dominoes pizza” means you can order via the phone, rather than having to try to use their voice app, which is, frankly, horrible.

Google will make the call using WiFi so obviously you need a good enough connection to send and receive the voice, but in my tests of using this so far it has seemed very good; I’m tempted to start using it for work calls; dialing into a conference line. I also rate this above the Echo’s call features which I find difficult to use and rather limited. I wonder if they will push to change that.

Has anyone else had any experience of using this? Anything you’ve found that I’ve missed?

Oh and yes – I’m back. I’m going to try to make some updates each day to keep people informed of major updates in the UK market.
