Samsung announces world’s first 5G Modem with Exynos Modem 5100

With 5G hitting the markets not earlier than 2019 in some countries, brands are already racing to launch their first 5G ready smartphone. Earlier there were rumors about Qualcomm launching the 5G Modem with SD855 SoC. Now Samsung has officially launched the Industry’s first 5G Modem with Exynos Modem 5100 which is fully compatible with 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 15.

The new Exynos Modem 5100 is built on the power-efficient 10nm process with support for legacy radio access technologies designed into a single chip. It supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums specified in 3GPP’s 5G standard along with 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE.

The new Exynos Modem 5100 can deliver max downlink speed up to 2Gbps under sub-6GHz settings and up to 6Gbps under mmWave spectrums which translates 1.7 to 5 times the speed what 4G offers. The Exynos Modem 5100 will be made available to OEM’s by end of 2018. So we can expect the new Samsung Galaxy S10 will come with 5G support out of the box.
