What is Memorial Day exactly?

Memorial Day is meant as a day to remember those who Died while serving; not to be confused with Veteran’s Day which celebrates all US veterans. The practice of placing flowers on soldiers graves is an ancient custom, but Memorial Day really took off after the Civil War. With over half a million Americans dying in one conflict, a lot of people from both the North and the South felt the need to memorialize their fallen loved one. It is tradition to visit cemeteries and memorials to pay respects to those who how died and to place an American Flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Due to the change of Memorial Day to the last Monday of May, making it a long weekend many have only started to think of Memorial Day just as that, forgetting its importance. Don’t treat this Memorial Day as just a long weekend. Think of the real reason you are free from work while barbecuing in the sun with your family.
