November 1st 2018 Free Xbox ‘Games With Gold’

In November's Games with Gold, Battlefield 1 will be free to download for the full month of November. Battlefield 1 is a very slick WWI shooter but with the added bonuses of vehicles to drive or fly and terrain to obliterate. The original Assassin's Creed game from 2007 will be available from Nov 1st - 15th and I'm sure you all know the formula for this popular franchise by now. You're an assassin. You perform missions in an open world. You have almost spider-like abilities when it comes to climbing and jumping, and you kill people!

Victor Vran from October's Games with Gold is still available until Nov 15th. It's an action RPG with everything you'd expect, from hordes of loot to billions of enemies and a flimsy storyline to keep you engaged! You can read the review for Victor Vran here.

Battlefield 1

Available Nov 1st – Nov 30th

On first glance, if you're unfamiliar with the Battlefield series, you might mistake it for a HADDOCK clone [EDITOR – you mean COD clone, right?]. Continuing its trend of mixing first-person shooting with vehicles that you can drive or fly around, there are a lot of different play styles that you can employ whether in single or multiplayer. You don't need to be a twitchy no-scoping sniper assassin to be a great asset to your team. You could opt to drive a tank and smash through a fortified building, creating a makeshift doorway for the rest of your team to charge through.

Do you fancy yourself an ace pilot? Jump into one of the World War I planes and dogfight your way to victory. Commit to strafing runs to decimate the enemy lines and soften them up before your infantry finish them off.

Even if your head is stuck in the medieval period, you could decide to mount a horse, unsheathe your sword and get mowed down by a machine gun that's 500 yards away. It's all up to you!

There are dozens of authentic WWI weapons to customize and equip yourself with too, and they all seem to work as they should (I'm still waiting for my time machine, so I can actually verify this!)

The gameplay is fun and frantic, and you'll be able to relive all those moments that you saw in black and white as a kid. Work with your team to capture objectives, mow down Jerry before he gets your friends. Get run over by a tank and admire the authentic-sounding tank tracks grinding over your poor corpse.

There are also a lot of nice graphical touches in Battlefield 1. Your weapons can get dirty if you roll about in the mud. Rain can affect your scopes which makes it harder to aim sometimes. Sandstorms will give you a chance to move wholly undetected but beware – the same will be true for your enemies!

If you haven't played a Battlefield game before and you want a taste of what Battlefield 5 will be like, download this game for free on November 1st and show your enemies what's for!

Assassin's Creed

Available Nov 1st – Nov 15th

I've lost count of the amount of Assassin's Creed games that have been made. According to the wiki, there are 21... and this Assassin's Creed is the game that started it all, movies included.

So what made this game so successful? It's an open-world sandbox environment for the most part, and there are three huge cities to explore from the ground up to the very tallest peaks in the sky. You're encouraged to do this, in fact, as you'll need to get as high as you can to perform scouting and intelligence gathering missions – stepping stones on your way to completing your assassination.

A lot of the fun to be had in Assassin's Creed is the exploration. Running around, climbing buildings and seeing how far you can get. It's a very rewarding and safe version of Parkour, and if you jump off a 300 ft high tower, you can sometimes land in a very shallow cart of hay rather than going “splat” which is what should really happen.

You play as the Assassin Altair for the vast majority of the game, and your Assassin's Guild is in a perpetual war with the Templar, who will become a familiar enemy throughout the franchise.

There are nine people that you're tasked to kill, and you'll need to complete a series of missions before you can make the actual hit. The missions for each stage of the assassination can become very similar, and by the ninth hit, you'll know exactly what you're doing because you've done it eight times before.

There are other side missions to do like saving civilians and collecting flags, but the meat and bones of the game will be the assassinations, at least mission-wise.

The game might not have been such a success if navigating and controlling Altair wasn't so easy and cool. There are no complicated button combinations. Your timing doesn't need to be perfect, and you can climb or run over almost anything with minimal effort.

All in all, I'd highly recommend playing through the original game at least once – especially if you've enjoyed the subsequent titles.
