Verizon Will No Longer Activate 3G and Older Smartphones

As of July 1st, 2018 Verizon Wireless is no longer activating phones that are not Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) compatible. This includes 3G phones such as flip phones, messenger phones and feature phones that you have been holding onto in your junk drawer.  Not only does it exclude the older style of basic phones, it excludes a number of iPhone and Android models from the last few years including the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. Rest assured that if you are still using one of these “older” models of phones, Verizon will continue to operate their 3G network until the end of 2019. This will especially effect those trying to shop on a budget by purchasing or using a older phone for a child or new line activation.

Verizon Wireless provide CNET with the following quote:

“For several years we’ve been publicly saying that our 3G CDMA network will remain available through the end of 2019. Virtually all traffic on our network is on our 4G LTE network.”

“To facilitate a smooth transition to 4G LTE capable products and services, we are no longer allowing devices that are not 4G LTE capable with VoLTE to be activated on our network.”
