Celebrating Friendship on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is not only the perfect day to celebrate Moms but also Girlfriends! Here’s how …

MOTHER’S DAY – FOR MOMS*: Chances are you have those friends that you met because of your children. These are the girlfriends that have been through thick and thin with you. They’ve babysat your children during special date nights, have been there when you were sick and needed someone to watch the kids, etc. Why not celebrate that special Friendship this Mother’s Day?

Motherhood: All love begins and ends there. — Robert Browning

Send a Card

A card with a special note about how much her friendship has meant to you can mean so much on Mother’s Day. You might even want to include a photo of a special memory the two of your have shared as being mothers. It’s a simple and thoughtful way to say how much you appreciate her friendship and everything she’s done for you. If you want, you can also include a Gift card to her favorite store so she can pamper herself.

Get Together for a Special Lunch

Everyone knows how much girls love to have lunch together. Why not have a special lunch to celebrate your friendship this Mother’s Day? It doesn’t have to be on the exact day. Get together the day before or the day after at your favorite place that’s a bit of a splurge. Enjoy a couple glasses of wine and a good dessert while you reminisce about all the memories you have of raising your children together.

Do Something Special

Last, but not least, take the time to do something special together. After all, it is Mother’s Day. It might be a day of shopping at your favorite boutiques or a day at the spa. If you have small children at home, it might be something as simple as finding a quiet spot to talk or lay in the sun. Heck, even a nap can be special when you’ve got small children. Just do something you both love.

Mother’s Day is more than just celebrating families. Sometimes it’s getting together with other moms that you share a special bond with. Celebrating friendship on Mother’s Day may not be something you’ve considered in the past, but chances are it makes perfect sense. After all, how many times has your friend been there when you’ve been in a bind as a Mother? How many times have you been there for her? While it may no longer take a village to raise a child, it does often take several great women.

Take the time this Mother’s Day to celebrate the friends that have made raising your children easier.

* And don’t forget about Non-Moms.

One-third of all women do not have children. This can be by choice, circumstance or unfortunate challenges. As a girlfriend to Moms and Non-Moms, be aware that Mother’s Day may be a tough day for some women who wanted to be a mom or who have lost a child. Some moms don’t live near their children or have limited access to their kids because of custody arrangements. And some girlfriends may have lost their mom, so this holiday is especially difficult.

As a girlfriend, be sensitive to what she may be feeling. Include non-moms in your celebrations. Maybe they have fur babies (pets) or are committed aunts – they deserve to be celebrated too, right?

Mother’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate all the women in your life – family and friends. We all ‘mother’ each other in our relationships and friendships. Let’s celebrate the bond that women have and our commitment to each other and to friendship.

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day with your girlfriends?
