It's the last weekend for ice skating and 'Tis the Season for Science at the Cal Academy in Golden Gate Park

  • 'Tis the Season for Science
    California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco

    Through Sunday, January 7, 2018 you can take in not only classic Cal Academy sights like the giant T-Rex skeleton, aquarium, planetarium, rain forest, and African hall, but special winter-themed programming and attractions as well as part of its annual "'Tis the Season for Science" lineup. Step into the museum's East Garden and hit the ice on their holiday ice rink, which offers 55-minute skating sessions for visitors this winter.   • Ice Skating in Union Square
    San Francisco
    Friday–Sunday, 10 am–11:30 pm

    Union Square, San Francisco's main shopping district, gets into the ice skating spirit during the holiday season with an outdoor ice rink sponsored by Safeway. 90-minute sessions start on every even hour.   • Ice Rink at Embarcadero Center

  • French Storytime (L'Heure du Conte)
    San Anselmo Library
    Friday, 11–11:30 am

    For children of all ages and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, and play together. Share books, stories, rhymes, music in French. No registration required.   • Last Weekend for Ice Skating: Marin on Ice
    Northgate Mall, San Rafael
    Friday-Sunday, noon–10 pm

    This is the last weekend for Marin on Ice, an outdoor skating rink in San Rafael's Northgate Mall. Bring the kiddos out to for a day of ice skating. Skating costs $15 per person, which includes skate rental, and "Skate Buddies" (the blue plastic chair-like supports) are available for beginnners.   • Marin Country Mart Farmers Market
    Marin Country Mart, Larkspur Landing
    Saturday, 9 am–2 pm

    Enjoy the best local and organic produce, flowers, pastured meats, seafood, organic cheeses, yogurt and milk, breads, baked goods, pasta, confections, olive oil, and brunch and lunch offerings!     The Mill Valley Recreation Department is offering a free Hatha flow yoga class the first Saturday of the month at Old Mill Amphitheater. Prepare to sweat, breathe, align and stretch in this fun, unique environment. Designed for students of all levels, this class will be held in all weather conditions except severe rain.   • Whale Watching at Point Reyes Lighthouse

    Go see the whales out at the Point Reyes Light House and Chimney Rock. Shuttle buses leave Drakes Beach every 15–20 minutes. The cost is $7 per person. Children under 16 are free.   • Learn to Skate: Free Clinic
    McInnis Park, San Rafael
    Saturday, 10 am
    Join us at the McInnis skatepark where rangers will offer tips and techniques for beginners as well as ways to attack features that build confidence and skill. This event is geared towards the newbie skateboarder and those looking to cross over from other board sports, but aren’t quite sure how to start. This event is ideal for all ages. All skill levels are welcome and no experience is necessary. Wear comfortable athletic clothing and sturdy shoes. Don’t forget to bring your board, helmet, and pads.   • Healthy Parks, Healthy People Trail Walk
    Stow Lake, Golden Gate Park
    Saturday, 10 am–noon

    Start at the Stow Lake Boathouse for some light stretching followed by an easy-going walk around one of the parks most popular areas. Meet by the picnic tables next to the dock. Guides will provide a short interpretive program designed specifically for each location. The staff will have first aid equipment and are certified in CPR. Please bring water, wear a hat, and always use plenty of sunscreen. Event website
  • Experience Elephant Seals
    Elephant Seal Overlook, Chimney Rock, Point Reyes National Seashore
    Weekends, 11 am–4 pm
    View an elephant seal colony through binoculars and scopes. A special 30-minute slide program about elephant seals may be available at the Lifeboat Station at Chimney Rock, depending on staffing availability. Check at one of the Visitor Centers for whether the slide program is being offered. Visitors will need to take the winter shuttle bus from Drakes Beach.   • Family Art Making

    The Family Art Making table offers a drop-in art project activity and gallery guide led by professional teaching artists and teen Museum Ambassadors. Artists of all ages are welcome to join.   • Nike Missile Site Open House
    Marin Headlands, Sausalito

    Unique in the National Park Service, this restored Cold War anti-aircraft missile site has intriguing stories to tell.   • Science Saturday
    Environmental Discovery Center, Santa Rosa
    Saturday, 1–4 pm

    Bring the family for fun, hands-on activities at the Environmental Discovery Center at Spring Lake Regional Park. This month we will explore petrology, the branch of geology that studies the origin, composition, distribution and structure of rocks. Activities start on the hour at 1, 2 or 3 pm.
