Through Sunday, January 7, 2018 you can take in not only classic Cal Academy sights like the giant T-Rex skeleton, aquarium, planetarium, rain forest, and African hall, but special winter-themed programming and attractions as well as part of its annual "'Tis the Season for Science" lineup. Step into the museum's East Garden and hit the ice on their holiday ice rink, which offers 55-minute skating sessions for visitors this winter. This is the last weekend for Marin on Ice, an outdoor skating rink in San Rafael's Northgate Mall. Bring the kiddos out to for a day of ice skating. Join us at the McInnis skatepark where rangers will offer tips and techniques for beginners as well as ways to attack features that build confidence and skill. This event is geared towards the newbie skateboarder and those looking to cross over from other board sports, but aren’t quite sure how to start. This event is ideal for all ages. All skill levels are welcome and no experience is necessary. Wear comfortable athletic clothing and sturdy shoes. Don’t forget to bring your board, helmet, and pads. Healthy Parks, Healthy People Trail Walk

Start at the Stow Lake Boathouse for some light stretching followed by an easy-going walk around one of the parks most popular areas. Meet by the picnic tables next to the dock. Guides will provide a short interpretive program designed specifically for each location. The staff will have first aid equipment and are certified in CPR. View an elephant seal colony through binoculars and scopes. A special 30-minute slide program about elephant seals may be available at the Lifeboat Station at Chimney Rock, depending on staffing availability. Check at one of the Visitor Centers for whether the slide program is being offered. Visitors will need to take the winter shuttle bus from Drakes Beach. Bring the family for fun, hands-on activities at the Environmental Discovery Center at Spring Lake Regional Park. This month we will explore petrology, the branch of geology that studies the origin, composition, distribution and structure of rocks. Activities start on the hour at 1, 2 or 3 pm.
