Book Review: Martin Luther

Martin Luther is the tenth title in the Christian Biographies for Young Readers series written by Simonetta Carr and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This hardcover book is beautifully illustrated by Troy Howell and also includes relevant historical drawings and pictures which bring the story of Martin Luther to life. This book, as with the entire biographical series, is well made, well researched, and undeniably engaging and informative.

This particular volume concerns itself with the life and influence of Martin Luther, arguably one of the most influential leaders of the Protestant Reformation. This movement in turn laid the foundation for much of the fruit of Western Civilization and its progeny, the United States. Ideas are consequential and the burgeoning of the Reformation brought with it Christianity’s law of liberty. Its impact is still clearly seen.

Martin Luther follows the early origins of Luther and sees his journey from a timid and fearful man to one whose spark lit the fires of liberty in Christ. His story is engaging and written in such a way as to inform yet entertain the reader. The details are neither heavy nor does it leave its reader in want. The story line is easy to follow and crafts the most important details of Martin Luther’s life into digestible bits for the young reader. More importantly, it highlights and reiterates the most important concept of the Reformation: that justification is by grace through faith and is solely a gift of God.

October 31, 2017 will mark the 500th anniversary of the posting of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. Sadly, few are unaware of the significance of this seemingly mundane historical event. Simonetta Carr, through her biography Martin Luther seeks to bring much needed awareness of the life and influence of this important man not only in Christian history, but world history as well. As with her other works on great Christian men and women, she brings much needed clarity and demonstrates the necessity to remedy our willful ignorance.

As Christians we should seek to apply our faith to all areas of life. Ours is not a Sunday faith. Our profession of Christ is of no effect if we continue to fail to educate our children and to deny them the rich history of our Christian forbears. Commit yourself to give your children a distinctly Christian education, to immerse them in the sweet words of the law-word of God, and to saturate them in prayer. Let Deuteronomy 6 frame your mind and your heart as you seek to raise God’s gift to you in the nurture and admonition of the LORD. I implore you, dear readers, buy this and all books in the Christian Biographies for Young Readers series. Give your children the gift of a life well lived.
