Mini Get Away – Just What We Needed

Last week I took the kids on a spur of the moment get away! We have had so much happen since September, that it felt like one thing after another. I thought it would be good if we could get away and recharge. So we took Monday and Tuesday away from home, we didn’t go anywhere special. Our trip was kept simple and fun. I think all in all the kids had a good time. There were lots of smiles and lots of laughs. There were homeschool goodies sitting at the door when we got home. Lots of new and wonderful things to use for the year.

We actually left late Monday afternoon. We headed to 1000 Island Environmental Center to take a winter hike. The weather was gorgeous so we had to spend some time outside. I wanted to see if we could see the eagles at sunset hunting for food. We saw one eagle and I wasn’t quick enough grab a picture. It’s amazing how different the paths look in winter. I was amazed at just how much ice and snow was actually above the actual path. You will be able to see it in one of the pictures. It was a little nerve wracking walking near the river as it was a little icy in spots. If you know me and my Ally McBeal thinking, you will probably guess I had a vision of someone falling into the river and getting carried away by the strong current. No worries, we all are safe and no one fell into the river. We weren’t as close as that sounded. While we were there the kids were to look for winter berries that the birds can eat and nests. We saw I think 3 or more nests.

After we finished up at 1000 Island we went out to dinner to Pizza Ranch. They had these volunteers there that got to be extremely annoying. You seriously just finished putting the last in your mouth and they were asking to take plates. We finally had to tell them to stop because it was like every minute they were walking by or asking. I get that they want tips and stuff but my goodness that was just terrible.

After dinner we went to Walmart. My original plan was just to let the kids each pick out a new outfit. Well one turned into three. At least my daughters was all on sale for the most part. We ended up getting our snacks to last up the couple days that we would be there. I think my son got some coloring pages. We finally got to the hotel about 9:30. There was no swimming for us that night as we were pretty exhausted.

Tuesday we woke up and got ready. Tuesday was suppose to be in the 50s, so we were really excited to hang out with our friends at the park. We started the morning out shopping. We ended up walking the mall before it opened. Nothing like seeing what stores were there as we haven’t been there for awhile. We walked about 45 minutes and then Bath and Body opened. I felt bad for my son as he had to sit there while his sister went and smelt everything. Every year she gets new body wash, lotion, and perfume. I must admit she kills me with the perfume and I have to remind her that she only needs ONE spray. By the time we got out of there another friend had called and we had met them for lunch. After lunch we did a little more shopping and then went to the park. It was a little wet at the park with all the melting. After the kids played for a while we took a walk by the river. I don’t want to say the river but maybe it is. I don’t know. It was a gorgeous walk. After that we did more shopping. We headed to the hotel and we went swimming. The kids swam for an hour and a half.

An hour after swimming my daughter said that her sinus by eyes and her forehead hurt. I didn’t think anything of it. I said we would see how she was in the morning. She woke up and said that nothing hurt. We packed up and then went to have a really good breakfast. While we were at Perkins I noticed that my daughters eyes were pink all the way around. She looked like she had raccoon eyes, but they were pink. I figured I would see how the day goes and then call the Doctor. After Perkins we headed to the EAA.

At the EAA we bought a membership for the family. It was totally worth it as it allows us to get into other museums free, which is a bonus! We walked and headed towards Kid Venture so the kids could explore. My daughter loved exploring everything she could get her hands on and try. They didn’t have the picture booth this year. I was a little bummed as I wanted knew fun pictures with them. After that we went and saw all the airplanes and the hangers. In summer we will go back so we can see the outside hangers as we have never seen them. On the way home my daughter said that her face was starting to hurt and get itchy.

I called the doctors when I got home and had an appointment scheduled. It wasn’t sitting well with me that her face hurt and the rash had spread on her face. I took her to the urgent care and well that doctor didn’t even really look her over. He was more concerned with the rash on her arms. He rattled off a bunch of things it could be and prescribed some cream. I wasn’t sure that I was going to use the cream because I didn’t agree with him. So I was going to wait and see what our doctor would say the next day. She still had a light rash yet but I had given her benadryl the night before. Even her arm looked better. I did take pictures so I could show the doctor. He thinks that she had a little virus on top of the Allergic Reaction. I have never seen an allergic reaction like that before from swimming. Now that the hotels started going green, the chemicals are now different. Every time she gets red and itchy. This time it was different as it lingered. We will try zyrtec or benadryl before we go swimming next time. As for her arms it was just dry skin or eczema and was nothing to worry about. He also thought she may have had a little virus on top of the allergic reaction.

When we got home a lot of the stuff I ordered for homeschool for the year started showing up. I had even more to put away then I left with. I was so excited as the stuff started rolling in. I will share later this week about the new stuff I have ordered and the curriculum we are now using.

Hope you all had a wonderful week!
