Kid Approved DIY Bird Feeder Project

This year, I have noticed a ton more birds than any of the years before. Maybe I never noticed them before because I was not working at home, or maybe its a take over of the birds. Whatever the case, its nice to see them and I am so glad they are here. Something about a family of birds (as long as it’s not crows, you know how I feel about those) singing a song in my yard that is so soothing. And that is the inspiration for our short and sweet tutorial today. We are going to make an eco-friendly Diy Bird Feeder. Gather your supplies and meet me in the garden!

To Make Your DIY Bird Feeder, You Will Need:

Jiffy Seed Pots
Peanut Butter
Bird Seed
Jute twine for hanging

I chose Jiffy Seed Pots for 2 reasons. 1) They kinda suck for starting seeds and 2) because they suck for seed starting, we had a TON on hand, not being used. The added bonus of using them is that they are COMPLETLY biodegradable and bird-friendly. You can get them at your local Walmart (maybe, they do tend to sell rather quickly) or on Amazon.

Steps 1-2-& 3 For A DIY Bird Feeder

Poke a hole

Step 1 Poke Holes in the bottom sides of your jiffy pots. Run jute twine thru both holes and tie at the top.

add some peanut butter

Step 2 Smear with peanut butter. This step is fun for kids. Simply have them place the pot over their closed hand. This step is a little messy but fun!

Add Some Seeds

Step 3 Roll the peanut butter covered pot in a large wide bowl of bird seed. Cover the peanut butter with seeds and press lightly. This step is also a bit messy.

Feed Your Birds

It’s soooo cute!!

This project is so fast and fun, it is a great way to get the kids involved in taking care of nature. After you are finished with each DIY Bird Feeder, simply hang anywhere in the garden where the birds frequent. We made 3 of them and lined the yard hanging near the rain chain, the succulent hanger and on a shepherds hook amidst the ferns.
