Hanging Succulent Planter How-To
For this project, you will need:
5 mini tin pails. You can get them 3 for $1 at the Dollar Tree
Aluminum wire (also found at the dollar tree)
Nail polish (you guessed it, dollar tree)
Beads
Succulent plants
dirt
To begin, you will need to knock a few drainage holes in the bottom of each pail, just like for the rain chain. To do that, use a screw or nail and tap a few times with a hammer. I use 4-5 holes depending on how big I get them.

After you knock out a few holes, you need to paint each of your tin pails for your hanging succulent planter. I just learned the marbling method, as explained in my previous post. To achieve this look, pour little dots of nail polish into a bowl of water. Slowly dip and remove from water. Allow drying fully before moving on.
PRO TIP:
After dipping in nail polish, you might find that some of the holes have filled with nail polish. Just re-tap and you are good to go!
Wire, Beads and Your Fingertips
While making this hanging succulent planter, wrapping the wire was just as simple as painting the tin pails. I slid on a few pretty beads, then on each end, I wrapped around a skewer to get that spiral look. For bigger spirals, you could also use the handle of your hairbrush. Anything will work so long as it is round.
What I didn’t Anticipate
When I started this project, I did not realize that the handles of a couple of the buckets had been removed. I was testing a theory out, and it just did not pan out the way I wanted it too. So as I hooked the second pail up to the third I ran into a problem. Instead, I ran the wire straight through the bottom of the pail and hooked it to the next, creating a knot to hold it to the upper pail.
And it worked. I love the way each of the lower buckets tilts to a different side, doing their own thing. I feel another project in the making already
Adding Dirt and Succulents
I love this part. Take a small cup and fill it with quality potting soil. I typically use Fox Farm’s brand, that you can pick up at most garden shops like Home Depot and even Amazon! Do not fill the bucket all the way, as you need to leave room for the plants. Gently pat the soil down a bit to pack it.
If you have succulents that are already growing, thinning them will also help with new growth, so collect some. I have chicks and hens growing along with several different types of various sedum succulents.
Don’t have any? No big deal. Any places are starting to carry several varieties that you can use in your hanging succulent planter. Its cool to be into gardening again, and these are SOOOO pretty. Check the garden section of almost ANY big box store or hardware chain, and I bet you will find at least one type of succulent!
Enjoying A Hanging Succulent Planter Indoors Or Out
I enjoy having a garden so much. Inside my home, you will find several potted plants. And while adding this to my dining area would be such a beautiful compliment, right off the porch is where it will live. Remember not to water too much! Also, as new growth happens, often times you will find little jumpers! They are just new plants, and you can easily pick them up and set them in the dirt. (they will take it from there )
