How To make Chocolate Covered Strawberries Easy

Learn how to make chocolate covered strawberries at home, and forget about the ones in stores.

Hey Foodies,

What do you think about Chocolate covered fruits? And which ones are your favorites?

As for me, I love homemade Chocolate Covered Strawberries.
I know most people go for the store-bought ones, probably because they think these are hard to make, but let me show you how easy it is and … a lot cheaper.

I like making Chocolate Covered strawberries for Valentine’s Day or romantic dinners with my hubby, but they are also great for parties, family reunions or for when you have guests over.

More Desserts:
  • Choc Peanut Butter Mousse
  • Peanut Butter Choc Muffins
  • Raspberry Choco Brownies

Now, I always saw them as a simple dessert, but when I searched for the best chocolate-covered strawberries recipe on other sites, I was surprised by the number of questions foodies had about them.

A lot of people don’t know how to decorate the strawberries, store them or which choc to use for dipping. And as you know, I like answering questions about the food I make and provide as much helpful information as I can.

So let’s dive a bit into details before making this yummy dessert.

What chocolate to use for Chocolate Covered Strawberries?

It all comes down to your taste, but here are your three best options:

  • Dark Choc – this one is dairy free so if you plan to make vegan chocolate dipped strawberries, this would be your best choice.
  • Milky
  • White Choc

I used the dark one for today’s recipe, but you can replace it with any of the other two.

How Long Do Chocolate Covered Strawberries Last?

If you have a party or a special occasion you are probably wondering how far in advance can you make chocolate covered strawberries and how to store them. My advice is, make them on the same day or the day before (if you can, of course).

Fresh ripe strawberries are very delicate fruits and they only last a few days at best. The California Strawberry Commision recommends buying only a day before you plan to dip them.

After dipping, you should only store them for 1-2 days. They are best served on the same day you make them.

As said above, strawberries are best fresh, and they only stay fresh for 1-2 days. I heard some people store them for up to 3-4 days, but I have never tried it and I wouldn’t risk ruining my party dessert. They decompose pretty fast and start looking mushy.

How to store Chocolate Covered Strawberries?

You can either refrigerate, store at room temperature, or freeze them. Now let’s go through each of these methods:

Refrigerate in an air-tight container

When refrigerating chocolate dipped strawberries, you need to keep in mind that they will condensate and look sweaty. That will seem unpleasant when you serve them, especially if you make them for a party. So you need to follow a few rules to avoid that.

First of all, you need to wait until the chocolate is completely hardened at room temperature. Then lay a paper towel on the bottom of the container, and place them on a plate, on top of the towel. If you make a large batch, you can arrange them in layers, and place a sheet of wax paper between each layer so they don’t stick together.

Before serving, you need to take the container out of the fridge and bring it to room temperature. This way you will avoid the condensation and they will still look fresh.

Store them at room temperature

Keep in mind that they will decompose faster at room temperature than refrigerated. That said, you can keep them on a plate, and cover them with something, but not air-tight. If the strawberries are fresh, they should last for 1-2 days (never more than 2).

Frozen

If you want to freeze them, you will need to cover them in choc completely. Otherwise, they will lose shape, crack and decompose. Place them on a sheet, separate from one another so they won’t stick, and freeze them. You can keep them for up to three months and before serving, you will need to bring them to room temperature and serve on the same day.

I have to say here, this is my least favorite method of storing chocolate covered strawberries, but it works if you really don’t have the time to make them on the same day.

How to melt the chocolate in which you dip strawberries

There are two ways of melting it:

  1.  On the stove, using a double boiler pan (like I did in the video below). If you don’t have a double boiler, simmer about 1/4 water in a saucepan. Then place a heat-safe bowl in the water and melt the chocolate in it, stirring from time to time.
  2.  In the microwave. You can microwave the choc on 50% power for 1 minute, but you will have to stop it at 30 seconds, stir once and then put it back for another 30 seconds. After that, you need to remove it from the microwave, stir and if it isn’t perfectly smooth put it back for 15 more seconds until fully melted.

How To Decorate Chocolate Covered Strawberries

A good idea would be to decorate them with white chocolate, and here is how:

  • The Plastic Bag Method: Melt white chocolate, then pour it into the corner of a plastic zipper bag and seal. Cut a very small tip of the bag’s corner, then gently squeeze and drizzle it on the chocolate covered strawberries, moving your hand to create artistic squiggles. Then place it in the fridge to set.

Another idea is to sprinkle the dipped strawberries with chopped nuts before placing them in the refrigerator. You can also dip them in chocolate chips, or cookie crumbles.

How To Make Perfect Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe

This easy chocolate covered strawberries recipe is perfect for parties, date nights or any other special occasion. They are delicious and super easy to make.

  • 1 lb large ripe strawberries ((long stems are best))
  • 8 Oz. chopped chocolate or chocolate chips ((milk, semi-sweet or dark))
  1. Rinse the strawberries well and pat dry (make sure they’re completely dry).

  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment.

  3. Melt your chocolate using a double broiler or in the microwave.

  4. Dip the strawberries one by one into the melted chocolate, coating about 3/4 of each. Twist and pull the strawberry out, letting the excess drip back into the bowl.

  5. Place the chocolate dipped strawberries onto the parchment then refrigerate for about 30 minutes, or until the chocolate sets.

TIPS:

After rinsing the strawberries, it is important to dry them really well. If there is any water left or any bruised areas, the chocolate won’t stick. So pat them with a paper towel and place them on another towel until they are completely dry.

Another thing to keep in mind is that strawberries grow on the ground. Hence, you need to wash them well before dipping and eating.

Leave the green caps on, and wash gently so you won’t bruise them.
