MELBOURNE | The Albion has risen from the ashes after the devastating fire which destroyed most of the iconic pub in 2015. Located in the heart of York Street in South Melbourne (just across from the South Melbourne Market) co-owner Mathew Darcy describes The Albion as the ultimate lifestyle venue. Boasting exquisite views of the Melbourne skyline, a stylish and sophisticated entertainment venue and a locally inspired sharing menu.
The food is designed to be shared and complements the communal ambience of The Albion – we were invited to check it out. The well thought menu brings together favourites that are light and fresh, using both seasonal and local produce. The food on offer is sophisticated and diverse, with our favourites being the Soft Shell Crab Bao, the Chicken Karaage and the Spiced Lamb on a cauliflower paratha. The chilled oysters from Bruny Island were a fantastic way to start the evening washed down with a crisp local Australian wine. If you are feeling on the hungrier side there is the Crispy Cider Braised Pork Belly or the Dry Aged Beef Sirloin, both of which make excellent filling choices.
For the sweet tooth, the house-made truffles and the lavish cheese board will take you through to the late night. The drinks menu offers a selection of beers on tap, local wines and cocktails which will bring you back to your last summer vacation. The Ginvender was a purple delight, made with Bombay Sapphire, St Germain Elderflower, Capi Tonic and lavender.
With an abundance of natural light, the rooftop has balmy tropical feel and is equip with ceiling misters to help you cool down on those warm Melbourne nights. The space is very stylish, with an open ceiling lounge area and plenty of seating with a view. The Albion is also a perfect space for events with the lower level featuring a spacious seating area, a large open bar and a private VIP room. The communal feel, relaxed ambience and the stylish décor truly makes it a lifestyle destination, a place that can be shared with friends and family for any occasion.
