Simply South – Exquisite Taste !

After having won accolades and awards with multiple outlets in Hyderabad city, Simply South has finally set shop in Bengaluru to satiate our Taste buds with excellent South Indian cuisine. Chef Chalapathi Rao has brought flavours of TamilNadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and also Hyderabadi cuisine for its uniqueness together at one place ! Having spent the best part of my life in TamilNadu and currently in Karnataka, Simply South brings some of my favourite dishes closer to home.We were here for a tasting session as part of the FBAB ( Food Bloggers Association, Bangalore) Bloggers meet and got to experience some mouthwatering dishes.

Ambience

The Ambience of the restaurant is true to its name. The brick wall concept compliments the flooring and the furniture. Each wall has a story to tell ranging from portraying the South Indian dance forms and  as well as art depicting the famous destinations of the southern part of the country and the culture. The lighting and decor is perfect. Each table has a Thali/ Cutlery prearranged. The place has a maximum seating capacity of 70 and is quite spacious as well.

The Food

Every table accompanies an assortment of pickles, chutney of the day and rice powder. We got to try a Bottle gourd based chutney which was yum. Best eaten with papadam or fryums. Having devoured the papads, it was time for the actual meal to begin

Kozhi Rasam : A delicacy of TamilNadu. An excellent and flavorful chicken broth enhanced with chettinad spices which uplifts the taste. Though the quantity was perfect, the taste was so good that it left me craving for more.

Mokka Jonna Garelu : Looks like masala vada that we get in our tea stalls or darshini’s, ain’t it ? Well, looks can be deceiving, this vada has Corn Nibbles spiced with onions, green chillings and coriander. Though the texture is the same, the corn adds a little sweetness to the taste and with coconut chutney as side, it is a good Telangana dish to relish.

Gobi Kempu Bezule : Cauliflower florets deep fried induced with mangalorean flavours. Nice and crispy and good taste overall.

Telangana Kodi Roast : One of my favourite dishes. Perfectly marinated and roasted chicken. Succulent pieces with yummilicious flavour every bite ! I had a lot of this !

Yera Varuval : Exotic spiced crispy prawns, a delicacy of TamilNadu. Its the spices that give it flavour and adding lime gives it a good texture. The prawns itself were perfect bite size and fried well.

Moova Vankai : Baby brinjal cooked in an Andhra style traditional gravy with sesame seeds. Quite a different style of preparing brinjal and a good one too, the gravy made the difference.

Ullavacharu : First look and we said Dal Makhani, nope this one  is an extract of horse gram. Taste and Texture gets a thumbs up.

Bendakaya Vepudu : Our very own Bhindi ( Lady Finger) cooked in Telangana style. Deep fried and tossed with native spices. The pic says it all, wonderful flavours and had that crunchy texture from deep frying.

Tomato Pappu : An Andhra delicacy of Tomatoes and Lentils cooked with green chillies and tempered. Have it with steamed rice and you will want more of this. Probably a dish frequented most of the days in Andhra households.

Dum ka Murgh :  When we speak ‘Dum’ cooking and ‘Chicken’, Hyderabadi cuisine stands out and this preparation left no stone unturned. Loved it and lets end it there !

Uragai Mamsam : A Telangana pickled mutton delicacy, this is for those who love the pickle taste and for those who don’t, do try this out and you might start liking pickle more!

Alleppey Fish Curry :  A God’s own country ( Kerala) delicacy. Raw mango infused curry with excellent fish. Sorry, was too busy eating and could not grab a pic of this !

We had Parotta, Iddiappam, Ragi Mudde and Plain rice to go with these wonderful dishes along with sambar and rasam.

Buttermilk was another hit of the day !

Desserts :  They have a wonderful assortment of desserts too ! Some of them that I got to try was

  • Gasgase Payasa – Poppy seeds payasam
  • Goddi Haggi- Broken wheat sweetened with jaggery and flavoured with cardamom
  • Khubani Ka Meetha – Stewed and Sweetened Apricot dessert.

Each one had unique flavours and were very filling indeed.

Service was quick and very welcoming. Valet parking is available so no issues there. They also have a South Indian Thali except Sundays which is one of the things on my list to try next. Highly recommended !
