Being a homeowner means there’s always a house project to tackle. Homes need maintenance and repairs all the time. Plus, you probably want to add personal touches to certain rooms and upgrade your home over time. Summer is the perfect time to catch up on budget-friendly house projects and the best way to save money as a homeowner is to learn how to DIY some projects.
If you outsource every task, your expenses can easily skyrocket. Even if you don’t have a ton of spending power, there are still some budget-friendly house projects you can tackle this summer.
My family and I want to do some things around the house but funds are currently limited for this so we will just go with smaller projects for now. Below are some of the budget-friendly house projects we’re considering that would be great for other homeowners too.

1. Paint a Room
This is an easy house project that you can tackle in just a few hours. You don’t need to hire professional painters to paint the inside of your home if you are on a budget and willing to learn on your own.
Our home’s previous owners actually left some paint behind that matched the different interior colors of the home so we did some touch-ups last summer. This year, however, we want to repaint our spare bedroom and one of our bathrooms.
We may go with a different color but new paint is not super expensive. Plus, we even got word that a local store was closing and selling paint at a discounted price.
A fresh paint job can really transform the overall look and feel of a room. New paint can even make a room seem more spacious. So grab a few friends or family members this summer, order a pizza, and paint a new room.
2. Small Landscaping Project
One thing I’ve realized since being a homeowner is that landscaping is a lot of work. It requires a ton of maintenance and can get expensive fast.
My husband mows the lawn for the most part and we paid our neighbor to spray for weeds. We do have a small garden and I found a great deal on some vegetable and herb plants – 4 for $10.
We also purchased some flowers around Mother’s Day to plant out front. From there, we removed some bushes out front that my husband has been wanting to get rid of for a while. Our neighbor was able to remove the bushes for $100 and will remove the roots for another $100. We are just paying as we go and hope to replace the soil in this area and add a few small plants and shrubs this summer.
This is just an example of some summer landscaping projects you can take on this summer. If you don’t know how to do something, ask around for advice. Luckily, our neighbor has been able to help us with some things for a discounted price.
3. Install a Backsplash
Installing a backsplash can really make your kitchen pop. This is something we did when we first move in and it definitely gave our kitchen a more modern feel. I actually got the idea of installing a backsplash when I went to my friend’s small wedding reception which was being held at his sister’s house.
She has recently bought a house and completed some home projects. I complimented her on her backsplash and she told me where they got the materials from to DIY the project.
It took my husband and I about 2 days, but we were able to install the backsplash without any prior experience. This project can be affordable when you go to a discount home store like we did. You’ll often pay one flat per square foot and you may need several sheets of tile for the project.
Choose a style you like but also be mindful of the cost per square foot. For example, at the store we visited, some fancier tiles costs $10+ per square foot while more basic styles cost anywhere from $1 – $3 per square foot. I think we settled somewhere in the middle and our tile was around $5 – $6 per square foot.
4. Replace a Light Fixture
Don’t forget to review your to-do list filled with small and easy house projects that can fit into anyone’s budget. One of those may involve replacing a light fixture outside or in the home. A brand new light fixture can also change the overall look and feel of a room so if you have one that’s too dim, too big, or too small, set a goal to change it out this summer.
This is usually an easy job so long as you have some basic tools. You can find nice light fixtures for under $100 at stores like Home Depot and Lowes.
5. Makeover Your Fireplace
This is something that is still on our to-do list for budget-friendly house projects. Having a fireplace in your home is a huge perk when you live in the Midwest. However, the one in our home is a little dated and we’re trying to decide how we want to update it.
If you have bricks surrounding your fireplace, you can always repaint them or remove the existing paint to upgrade or restore your fireplace.
We actually have wood surrounding our fireplace, so we may go for a reclaimed wood look. I love all the cool ideas HGTV shares for inspiration on this page.
6. Turn Your Closet Into a Cloffice
My son has two closets in his room so we thought of converting one to accommodate a desk along with some of his art materials. If you have extra closet space in your home, consider turning it into an office space or another type of room.
You may need to remove some shelves, paint, and shop for a few supplies. However, this can be a fun and affordable project that the whole family can join in on.
