How to Update your Wardrobe on a Budget

Yes, JNCO jeans are allegedly making a comeback. That doesn’t mean that wearing them for the past decade makes you ahead of your time.

The verb “adulting” my not have a place in Merriam-Webster yet, but when it does, it’s highly likely there will be something in there about dressing well. But that can be a challenge because nice Clothes aren’t cheap.

Fortunately, we know a few good tricks for how to update your Wardrobe without breaking the bank. Read on to find out how to stay in style without going broke.

Take Inventory

Now, we may have lead on that wearing out-of-style fashions is, er…out of style. However, pieces from a few years back might complement other, newer pieces well when used correctly. Part of maximizing your wardrobe is knowing what you wear, so go through your old stuff and ditch the clothes that are worn out or no longer in fashion.

Once you have a look at things, you might be able to restore a few pieces with a quick pressing at the cleaners. You don’t need that many clothes to have a functional wardrobe, but you need the right pieces. Identify what those are, and you know where to put your money.

Get over Brand Fanaticism

Consider how often you wear dress pieces. For some, it’s regular, but not for most of us. Many standard pieces can be had at great discounts if you can get over the fact that they don’t say Prada or Nike on them. For example, a pair of Budget slacks can look just like a pair many times the cost.

Find Deals

Particularly on things like supporting pieces. Solid tees, for example, can often be had in three packs and can be a supporting piece in many outfits.

Don’t be afraid to stop into a thrift store or check out a yard sale, either. These places often have gently-used clothes that are marked down to absurdly low prices. You wouldn’t feel weird about borrowing a friend’s jacket, right? So wash the thing, get over your fears and enjoy a sharp-looking piece that you got for a steal.

Make Modifications on the Cheap

For pieces like dress slacks and shirts, you may need to invest in a few modifications. This can come as an alternative to buying exactly your fit if you can get a great deal on, say, some pants with a slightly longer leg.

Find a place that offers free tailoring. Some will have clothes available in the business, but either way, you’ll be able to save on the costs of re-tooling your clothes and they will fit you better than anything that just came right off the shelf.

Really, these aren’t the kind of things you need to be a brain surgeon to figure out. It’s just that we are so indoctrinated to believe expensive brands and new clothes are a must. Free yourself from that notion, there’s a sweet new wardrobe on the other side!
