The Cheapest Ways to Give Your House More Space

So, you love your neighborhood, but you’re outgrowing your house — or maybe you’d love to buy a bigger home, but the finances just aren’t there yet. Either way, your situation probably isn’t as dismal as it feels. There are ways to add living space to your home without relocating or getting a second job.

If you’re looking to expand your space on a budget, here are several options for you to consider:

Add an Outdoor Room or Patio

One of the simplest and least expensive ways to gain extra living space is to go outside. Even small yards can accommodate a patio, gazebo or pergola.

These Outdoor living areas can be as simple or as complex as your time and budget allow, and they’re a great solution if you want to add extra space for relaxing, dining or entertaining. With the slew of options available for outdoor sofas, rugs, curtains, tables and lighting, you can easily have an outdoor space to rival any interior room.

Of course, outdoor rooms aren’t ideal in colder regions, and they won’t work if you need a nursery for the new baby. So, let’s look at a couple of ways to spruce up interior spaces that you already have but might not currently use.

Finish the Attic or Basement

The two most overlooked rooms in a home are the Attic and basement. If you’re running out of space to live, these can be great areas to finish out and use.

Need a nursery or child’s room? Just look up. Attics make great kids’ spaces. Do a quick Google search for “kid’s attic room” or “attic nursery,” and you’ll soon have a long list of terrific ideas to turn that dark room full of cobwebs into a bright spot where your child’s imagination can have full reign. Of course, you’ll need to ensure your attic meets some minimum specifications before you start.

Basements, on the other hand, make great man caves, media rooms or even home offices if you take the time to ensure they’re fully finished.

What if you’re already using your attic and basement — or what if space restraints and leakage are so problematic they aren’t viable options for a remodel? What if you already have outdoor spaces but you don’t really like to use them?

This last option may be the best solution for your problems.

Turn Your Unused Deck or Patio Into a Sunroom

Codes often allow for a Prefabricated Sunroom to sit on top of your existing deck or patio. This means you can skip the cost of pouring a foundation while at the same time getting more use from an area that is ignored when it’s too hot or too cold to use it.

Adding a prefabricated sunroom can benefit your home in many of the same ways as a full-on addition. Sunrooms can function as dining areas, entertaining rooms, guest rooms, home offices and more, but usually cost significantly less than a site-built add-on.

As you can see, it’s pretty easy to add on to your existing home, giving you lots of additional space on a budget.
