How To Prepare Your Vehicle For Hurricane Season

Car Maintenance

Most importantly, you will want to make sure you’re keeping up with your vehicle maintenance throughout the year. If you have not, you will want to do a basic check yourself if you are mechanically inclined or take it to a trusted mechanic to do this for you.

You will want to check your car’s fluid levels which will include, oil, transmission, brake, power steering, coolant, and windshield wiper fluid. Additionally, check the tire pressure, Batteries, Ac/heating, hoses, and belts. It would be smart to have a spare tire as well.

Keep Your Car Fueled

Don’t be a procrastinator and forget to fill up your gas tank. Not only will you have to pay a higher price, but you could miss out entirely on filling up your car due to gas shortages. Additionally, you could fill up gas appropriate canisters for long trips.

Emergency Kit:

Weather conditions can change in the blink of an eye, so it’s best to be prepared with an emergency kit in case you don’t have adequate time to gather all items and Family Members into your vehicle. You can buy pre-made kits or design your own! Here is a list of some common items you may need, but make sure you do your own preparations as well.

1. First-aid kits and any medications family members may need.

  1. Ponchos for every member of the family
  2. Blankets
  3. Flashlight with extra batteries
  4. Non- perishable food you can eat without cooking it first
  5. Battery Powered Fans
  6. Portable water and water purification tablets
  7. Radio with batteries

Stay Up To Date

Make sure you are staying up to date with current weather conditions, evacuation routes, and when the storm is expected to hit your current location. Having a radio with extra batteries will ensure you will have the option to listen to weather updates even if your power goes out.

Parking In A Safe Location

It would be best to find a safe location to park your car such as a garage. If this is not feasible, look for a location that is a safe distance away from trees, telephone lines, signage, loose debris, light poles, etc. Anything that could potentially fall on your car you want to stay far away from. Secure your car with a tarp and parking it on the side of a building will at least provide some protection.
