Be Prepared with Rothco

September has been named National Preparedness Month by FEMA and Homeland Security, giving people the opportunity to learn and understand the different ways to prepare themselves for disasters. One of the best ways to make sure you and your family are properly prepared for anything that comes your way is to make a plan and be ready. A Bug Out Bug, also known as a 72 Hour Bag or a Go Bag, is a great way to ensure that you have the supplies you need ready and in one place, in case a disaster strikes. Below we've listed some essentials items to pack into your go bag to maximize your chances of survival:

  • Polarshield Survival Blanket - Helps you keep warm by reflecting 90% of your body heat and can even add protection from the elements.
  • Tarp or Survival Tent - Shelter is your #1 priority during any disaster; keep something you can set up temporarily to protect yourself until you can find a more permanent place.
  • Fire Starter - Fire is essential to survival, not only does it provide warmth but you can use it to cook food and even help purify water if needed.
  • Emergency Lighting - Solar lights are great additions to your BOB as they will use the sun to charge and some even come with a USB port to charge your electronic devices if you don't have access to electricity.
  • Ponchos - Keep a poncho or two in your bag, as these can help you stay dry in the rain and could even be used to create a makeshift shelter if you had no other option.
  • Compass - Although cell phones have a built-in compass nowadays, it's important to keep an actual compass with you in case your phone dies and you need to figure out which direction to go in.
  • Duct Tape - Durable and versatile, having duct tape with you is ideal as it can be used to fix gear, patch holes in tents, and more.
  • First Aid Kit - Injuries can happen during a disaster so pack a fully stocked first aid kit so you can be prepared.
  • Knife - Whether you need to cut up so branches for kindling or you need to use it for hunting, a knife on hand will be essential if you are fending for you and your family in the woods.
  • Emergency Food - If you find yourself in a place where you can't forage for food, having a backup plan is important. Keep emergency food in your BOB so that you can feed yourself and your family while you are on the go.

Disasters don't plan ahead, but you can. Build your bug out bag today and keep it in a safe place. You will never know when a Disaster can strike and it will be important to have a plan in place for when it does so that you can keep your family safe.
