Navratan Jewellery Heaven on Earth

Is there anything like the most powerful Jewellery to exist on earth? Well actually, there is. Navratan jewellery is the epitome of beauty and power in traditional jewellery, comprising of nine powerful gemstones.  The craft of jewellery making is as old as the earth and as civilisations grew, the art of making jewellery found new paths. The Indus valley civilisation is famous for making jewellery that not only adorned the body, but for using gemstones that attracted heavenly bodies and their positive energies on humankind.

This led to the birth of Navratan jewellery, the perfect alignment of the nine most powerful gemstones adorning the human form. It comprises of diamond, ruby, emerald, coral, pearl, yellow sapphire, blue sapphire, hessonite and cat’s eye. Each stone represents one house of the astrological chart that stands for the nine planets. Each planet is said to influence the lifetime of a human being, and thus the navratan form of jewellery holds a strong and powerful significance in the life of the wearer.

The nine celestial Gods are Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mercury (Budha), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), Mars (Mangala), Jupiter (Brihaspati), Ascending Node, or Dragon’s Head (Rahu) and the Descending Node, or Dragon’s Tail (Ketu). According to a myth, the demon Bala wanted to go to heaven and conquer God Indra. The celestial gods suggested to Bala that he sacrifice himself. Bala agreed and the gods dismantled his body. Bala’s body parts then transformed into gemstones. Each god held one gemstone, and that’s how the Navgraha and Navratana merge into each other.

Navratan jewellery is said to be very beneficial and can cure the wearer from various diseases and ailments. Although, an important thing to note is the alignment of the stones in the jewellery piece has to be perfect.

The Sun i.e., Ruby is always in the centre, and all other stones around it. Navratan jewellery is usually worn set in gold, because gold is the only metal that will radiate the beauty of every single gemstone embedded in it perfectly.  Keeping in mind the fact that Navaratan is very traditional, it is not worn much today, as more contemporary styles are preferred.

A pair of earrings in Navaratan jewellery never fails to charm, though. The nine gems become an intricate part of the gold earrings, glistening subtly and creating a buzz about their radiance and beauty. All the stars lined up just for you, as you carry off an old world charm in the way you can best.

Navratan jewellery has for centuries been a favourite with Indians not just for its exceeding grace and beauty, but also for its powerful properties. Every Indian woman ought to have this talisman of power in her jewellery box that showcases a deep rooted heritage and knowledge of the stars and much more.
