Learn About Custom Cut Diamonds

Tags: diamond

Diamonds are mostly cut to specific standard sizes and are commonly used in standard jewelry designs. However, there are certain instances where a client’s design will just not work with the Diamond shapes or sizes available. This is the reason why custom diamond cutting service exists because they can deliver on any design request.

Isn’t it disappointing when you have already found the diamond shape that you desire with regards to cutting style, but then you have learned that the clarity range, color range and size range of what you are looking for is no avail. It can also be a strange and rare combination of the carat, clarity, and color, but that is all you wanted. With a variety of diamond shapes now available to complement the center stone which is a diamond, it is impossible to be able to stock all varieties of size, color, and clarity of each one of the diamond shapes. This is why custom cut diamonds are created to help the center stone you have chosen for your custom designed diamond ring.

If you’re that kind of person that was stated earlier, then that makes you a perfect person to consider having a custom diamond cut to your liking. However, before you decide to start the process, there are some things you need to be aware of depending on the type of cut. Your dream diamond cut might me from an existing diamond market or it can still also be from a rough stone.

The diamonds in the market used in custom cutting are thoroughly located and selected in order to make sure it is suitable for re-cutting. It’s not just simply picking a random diamond and re-cutting it. Some factors should be considered in choosing one.

1.) You have to make sure graining levels are not too high.

2.) Make sure that there is little or no existing strain in the diamond because a diamond that has strain can cause the stone to bust on the wheel.

3.) Assure that the re-cutting will not end up in surface breaching inclusions on the crown, in such a way that it will not compromise structural integrity.

4.) You must be guaranteed that the proportions and the precision of the stone’s cut will not end in too much weight loss as to cut down the value of the diamond upon the loss of carat weight. Cutting down weight to increase cut quality result to a balance value, however, there are many diamonds in the market, which would result in the loss of too much carat weight.

In the case of rough diamonds that to be custom cut, you are in the same way in risking as the jewelers and diamond cutters experience when having diamonds cut from the rough. It is because rough diamonds that have been mined from the earth were not purchased in a similar way that finished polished diamonds were. Finished polished diamonds have already undergone the process of GIA or AGS certified and the carat weight, clarity & color & cut quality have already been established by that lab. In purchasing a rough diamond, they have been grouped into “lots” or “businesses” and clarity, color and to a degree carat weight are assessed. There are times where the rough comes out as estimated and sometimes it doesn’t.
