Split ends are bad news for anyone’s hair!
Split ends weaken the Hair shaft and cause it to break. Interestingly, nobody likes to trim their hair especially when it’s not even long to begin with. We would rather hold on to the hair strand for as long as we can and woe betides anyone who brings a scissors near us. But what if we told you that NOT trimming your hair might be the reason your hair isn’t retaining the length it should?
OK we know that sounds counter intuitive. On the surface, it shouldn’t make sense that reducing the length of your hair will make it longer. But read on, and you’ll see why trimming might be what your hair needs.
What are split ends?
Split ends is the splitting of the hair shaft due to excessive heat, chemical or mechanical damage. Excessive use of hair straighteners, curling irons and hair dryers could be hazardous to your hair. Especially if you don’t use a heat protectant first. This is because high heat breaks down keratin which is the natural protein structure coating the hair. When this happens, the shaft splits.
Also chemical treatments like relaxers and hair dyes work by breaking down keratin so it can penetrate the hair shaft and straighten it. This process makes the hair susceptible to split ends.
How To Fix Split Ends
Splits ends are better prevented than cured. Once they occur, the only solution is to cut them off. If left unattended, the split travels further down the hair shaft and damages the hair even more. Also, it would undoubtedly lead to severe breakage. And of course your hair won’t get longer if it’s breaking every minute.
