Golden Globes 2018: Our Top Fashion Picks

On Sunday night, the 75th annual Golden Globes occurred in Los Angeles, USA. The event is usually an exclusive and prestigious affair, filled with glamour, gorgeous dresses and Hollywood royalty; however, this time around, there was more of a serious undertone.

As part of the Time’s Up initiative, which includes many Globes attendees such as Reese Witherspoon, Gal Gadot and Emma Stone, several Hollywood stars chose to wear black as a symbol of solidarity for the sexual assault victims of the #MeToo campaign brought to light by the misconduct of film director Harvey Weinstein.

Even though classic black was the colour of the night, female stars still managed to put a contemporary, fashion-forward spin on their designer gowns.

Here are our top fashion picks for the Golden Globes 2018.

Plunging Textures

Some actresses decided to highlight their assets and go for a plunging neckline on the red carpet. However, this wasn’t just an ordinary plunging neckline – it was all about the texture.

Halle Berry chose a lace, see-through number, whereas pregnant Eva Longoria opted for a floor-length look with a satin neckline by Zac Posen. Then there was Margot Robbie, who stood out in a Gucci gown featuring silver embellishment.

Who said plunging necklines couldn’t be chic?

Sheer Magic

Sheer fabric was also a common theme across the board.

Angelina Jolie chose to add some pizzaz to the sheer sleeves on her Atelier Versace gown by including feathered hems. At the other end of the spectrum, Catherine Zeta Jones looked stunning in an all-over sheet black lace dress from Zuhair Murad’s fall 2017 couture collection.

Then there was Alicia Vikander who simply nodded to the trend with slightly sheer sleeves in a custom Victorian-style Louis Vuitton gown. It might have been understated, but it sure was fabulous.

Sparkle and Shine

Tying in with one of the key trends of Autumn/Winter 2017/2018, there was an abundance of sequins, glitter and sparkle on the red carpet reminiscent of 1970s disco fever.

From featuring silver sparkle purely in one section a la Katherine Langford in Prada, to wearing sequins all over like Kerry Washington in Prabal Gurung’s pre-fall 2018 gown, it was all about shining bright like a diamond.

Dakota Johnson even took the phrase ‘business at the front, party at the back’ to a whole new level in her pre-fall 2018 Gucci gown. We love.

Asymmetric Straps

Another common theme for this year’s Golden Globes was asymmetry.

Reese Witherspoon was a vision in her one-shouldered mermaid gown by Zac Posen, and Greta Gerwig oozed class by teaming her asymmetric dress with a bold gold necklace. Then there was Rachel Brosnahan, who added a little romantic ruffle to her one-shoulder, resulting in a pretty yet feminine look.

Splash of Colour

Even though this year’s Golden Globes was a blackout, some actresses couldn’t resist adding a splash of colour to the proceedings.

Mandy Moore looked a vision in her Rosie Assoulin gown. This featured a standout belt that she combined with red lips and ruby earrings which conveniently matched the red carpet. Then Allison Williams took centre of attention in an ornately designed strapless floor-sweeper by Armani Prive with a burnt orange and silver bodice.

Our favourite though? Jessica Biel. She stood out a mile in her elegant, strapless, black and pink Dior gown. In our opinion, it doesn’t get much more Hollywood than that.

It was difficult to pick out our main Golden Globes favourites this year, because there truly were so many beautiful designs and ensembles. Every woman looked so incredibly divine. And the fact that the dresses were so symbolic this year just made these empowering women even more radiant. We applaud you, ladies!
