Too Cold To Bike Outside? Nope.

Ah, the plan to post a consistent weekly training recap is coming crashing down on me. I’m a little behind here. I don’t want to get bogged down in a really long post with tons of nitty gritty – so let’s just say I did a lot of biking, a lot of Running, and not a whole lot of swimming. I’ve been absolutely crushed in January and February with work, other projects I’m involved in, and the household/life/kid world and life seems like a whirlwind lately. So here’s a few highlights on my Ironman Lake Placid training for the past two weeks. I’ll do this by category…

SWIMMING: Let’s not talk about this. I’m having issues juggling my single mom days with childcare and on the days I don’t have the kids I tend to have early work meetings, and I’m staying at work late.

Going to the pool seems to be the thing that has to give lately. I can do my biking and running at home, but I can’t swim in my house – if only I could!

BIKING: Biking is going well – I’m loving my Wahoo KICKR bike trainer and the setup I have at home. I do have to drag the whole KICKR and the Bike back and forth between the two houses I live in and that’s a bit crazy-making.

But overall I’m feeling great about the trainer workouts. My coach Bob plans workouts in Trainer Road and so all I have to do is load them up and get on the bike.

I managed to bike outside for my long weekend bike ride this past weekend. It was supposed to be mild temps but it was COLD! It reminded me of the only other outdoor ride I’ve done this year – in January – when it was supposed to be nice but instead was not. Brrr! I was bundled up in all sorts of random layers.

I had a 3-hour ride on my training plan so it was a 50-mile route but it took a little bit longer than 3 hours. I didn’t feel as strong on the hills as I usually do, and I even had one wipeout due to not unclipping in time at an intersection (first wipeout in two years!), but the ride was good training!

Part of it was biking up Sugarloaf Mountain, which was a great workout and the views were nice at the top!

After that 50-miler, I did a 4-mile run to make it a brick. Since I had missed the brick part of my workout the weekend prior, I was glad to get this done.

RUNNING: Speaking of running, my long runs are going pretty well – some are with the group and some are on my own. I have to get creative sometimes – like running from my parents’ house to my house, letting the dog out, and running back for a total of 13 miles.

It is hard to juggle the long runs with the childcare on my single mom weekends – but I’m making it work.

I did a fun long run with the Winter Half Marathon group on Sunday – we ran from the suburbs down to DC, past all the monuments, and ended at Union Station. Then took the metro back to our cars. We took a lot of photos as if we were tourists!

I can’t get to the track workouts lately – I seem to always have a Wednesday night conflict. But I’ve been doing speed work on my own so at least I’m trying to get in the “track” in some way to push my limits.

LIFE: These kids… they’re just the light of my life. I know every mom must say these things – but my kids are each just such neat people. My middle one is the sports fanatic – he has a tough guy exterior but he’s really just a super sensitive, kind kid on the inside. He loved when I took him to his indoor soccer game one Sunday morning for a 6:40am call time. He didn’t mind waking up early and driving there in the dark — because we were together.

I’m getting such happiness from the simple things with the kids – even taking all three for haircuts. They’re at great ages now – 11, 7, and 5 – in the past it was cumbersome to take three kids to something like this, but now it’s fun.
We’re even having impromptu dance parties in the kitchen and fun cookie making evenings. I scrounged around in my pantry and found I had cookie ingredients, but no chocolate chips – so we melted tootsie rolls inside. It was decadent, and I had burned over 1,000 calories running so I said what the heck – live a little!

So that’s life in a nutshell for the past two weeks. A lot of biking and running, along with work and kids. Phew!

What’s your favorite workout?
