Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre-Workout Review – Pink Lemonade

Optimum Nutrition is a trusted brand when it comes to sports nutrition.

That’s why we have reviewed Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard pre-workout in the pink lemonade flavour.

Gold Standard Preworkout claims to increase energy and focus. As well as, support endurance and stamina.

It sets high standards when it comes to pre workouts so we thought we would try it out.

It sets to help you accomplish your goals when it comes to working out, whether that be lifting more weights or getting the last rep in.

Read on to find out if it lives up to its expectations…

Packaging

This tub is made of good quality plastic. The tub is black with shiny gold parts. The lid is shiny gold with ON embossed, the lid is mirrored.

It seems that high-quality materials have been used to produce this tub.

I like how it easy to see how much caffeine (175mg), beta-alanine (1.5g) and creatine (3mg) are in each serving.

It is a good size for the serving size, it’s not a big tub, like some preworkouts, are for the serving size.

Ingredients

Creatine Monohydrate, Amino Acids (L-Citrulline, Beta-Alanine as Carnosyn®, N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine), Acidity Regulators (Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Tartaric Acid), Flavourings, L-Carnitine, Vitamins (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Nicotinamide, Calcium D-Pantothenate, Cyanocobalamin, Thiamin Hydrochloride, Cholecalciferol, Pteroylmonoglutamic Acid), Colours (Beetroot Red, Beta Carotene, Curcumin), Grapefruit Bioflavonoid Complex, Natural Caffeine, Thickeners (Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Carrageenan), Anti-Caking Agents (Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Silicate), Sweeteners (Sucralose, Acesulfame K), Panax notoginseng Root Extract Powder.

Suggested Use

Mix 1 level scoop (11g) in 350ml of cold water. Recommended consumption of 1 serving per day.

Taste and Mixability

Gold Standard was definitely not gold when it came to the taste. It didn’t taste particularly nice,it reminded me of a sour gobstopper that was unbearable as a child.

Although, taste isn’t what preworkouts are about so I gave it the benefit of the doubt.

It was a smooth consistency but did have some residue yesterday.

Effectiveness

I did feel a little more energetic after taking the preworkout, nothing major but I had an energy boost for around 20 minutes until it wore off.

Whilst working out I became slightly more alert and focussed but that also wore off after about 20 minutes.

I personally, don’t think this pre-workout was as good as other pre-workouts I have tried I would say it is an average supplement. Obviously, preworkouts work differently for everybody so I don’t want to be too negative.

My endurance levels were probably the same as normal, nothing had changed in that aspect.

I would recommend trying Gold Standard as you may have a more positive experience than me.

Side Effects

After around 10 minutes of taking Gold Standard, I felt a tingle in my left hand, around 5 minutes after it was also in my right hand.

Once I started my workout, I had forgotten about the tingling and it wore off, it didn’t affect my workout and is a temporary side effect from the beta-alanine.

I noticed that I was sweating a lot more than usual during my workout, I can only assume this was due to the preworkout.

My hearing went a bit weird, it felt like I was listening whilst having my head underwater.

I also felt slightly nauseous and light-headed around an hour after having the supplement.

One positive is that I didn’t feel a ‘crash’ afterwards, which is always good.

I would rate Gold Standard 3.5/10.

Other Users Experiences:

We had two other people try this preworkout to get their thoughts and opinions on Gold Standard by Optimum Nutrition.

This is because everybody has different experiences with supplements so we wanted to make the review more valid.

Let’s see what they thought about Gold Standard pink lemonade flavour…

Reviewer Lucas: Male, 25

Taste – 5/10 “This was drinkable but wasn’t particularly nice.”

Texture – 3/10 “This pre-workout just would not mix! There were still bits in it and it was lumpy at the bottom after aggressive mixing and putting it in a blender.”

Energy Boost – 6.5/10 “I went to the gym before lunchtime, which is unusual for me as I prefer to eat before going. My workout was still fine.”

Focus – 6/10 “I felt lightheaded a couple of times during my workout, this obviously affected how focused I was.”

Tingle – “None”

Burn – “None”

Shakes – “None”

Crash – “None”

Side Effects – “I felt really sick 2 hours after, although I wasn’t sick”

Other Notes – “For me, the texture of this pre-workout is a big put off, the taste wasn’t great and I have felt bigger benefits from other pre-workouts”

Overall Rating – 5/10

Reviewer Jason: Male, 26

Taste – 5/10 “I struggled to drink this, I couldn’t drink it all in one go.”

Texture – 4/10 “This pre-workout didn’t stir well at all, even after blending it I still had some residue at the bottom”

Energy Boost – 7/10 “Considering I went to the gym before eating, I felt like I had plenty of energy over a prolonged period of time. This was by far my longest workout of the year.”

Focus – 8/10 “I had a really good workout, I pushed hard on areas that I’ve never worked out before. I was willing to try new exercises and up the weight to work to fail.”

Tingle – “I felt a slight tingle in the neck and forehead.

Burn – “None”

Shakes – “None”

Crash – “None”

Side Effects – “The slight tingle”

Other Notes – “Energy levels were good and the workout was good also, but the taste and the lumps when stirring would put me off buying this one.”

Overall Rating – 6.5/10

Is Gold Standard a good pre-workout?

I personally, would say Gold Standard Preworkout is average, but I would recommend you try it as it other people can’t live without it.

Each reviewer did feel an energy boost, some lasted longer than others but that could be due to other factors.

We also all felt a little more focused than normal so this supplement is definitely worth having rather than working out with no preworkouts.

Gold Standard received an average rating of 5/10.
