New Aldi Dog Food Review

Langhams Aldi Dog Food is very good

Aldi dog food

These days we are spoiled for choice when it comes to Dog Food, there are hundreds of brands to choose from and it seams like nearly every shop you go into stands a good chance of stocking some.

Having three dogs myself means feeding a good quality dog Food can be expensive over time and I like other dog owners dont want to feed my faithful pets poor quality food.

I dont fall for the advertising gimmicks that some of the popular brands of dog food employ ( you can read about that in another one of my posts here ) and I always read the ingredients and I dont let the price of the food  fool me.

Being on a tight budget for our weekly family shop I started using Aldi, I have found some right bargains there from rice pudding to frozen pizza’s. The Aldi Dog food section has always been in my opinion quite poor with offerings like Earls dog food filled with meat and animal derivatives but only costing about £7 for 12kg however I avoid it like the plague.

So 6 weeks ago I spotted a new brand of Aldi dog food called Langhams, the packaging looked miles better than the usual pet related stuff they sell and at £6.99 for 5kg it was way more expensive per kg than their normal fair.

So just being nosey I picked the bag up and turned it over and it had the following ingredients:
rice(34%), turkey meal (22%),barley brown rice(8%) ,poultry fat, beet pulp, poultry gravy, alfalfa(2%) ,minerals,linseed(1.5%),seaweed(0.5%),mannan oligosaccharides(0.1%),citrus extract(0.04%),glucosomine(0.025%),yukka extract(0.02%),chondroitin(0.015%),parsley(0.015%),origano(0.015%),cranberry extract(0.01%),marigold meal(0.005%)

Langhams Aldi dog food is great for the price

I had to read the back again, I could not believe Aldi had dog food of this quality – not the best by a long shot but not shabby.

I just could not resist it so I paid £6.99 for 5kg working out that it equals about £16.78 for 12kg which is the standard for a large bag of dog food. Once home I used the review generator on All About Dog Food which scores dog food based on the ingredients only and it was awarded 3.5 out of 5, now that is fantastic for the price.

aldi dog food score 3.5 out of 5 which is awesome

 How good it this food?

I know the score for Langhams the new Aldi dog food does not mean much to most people so I will give some examples,  There are 457 different types of complete dry dog food that score between 0.1 which is Bakers Complete and 3.5 which is Langhams.

Advanced Nutrition Adult Large Breed from Pets at Home scores 3.2 and costs around £37.99 for 12kg

Barking Heads Big Foot scores 3.5 and costs around £47.99 for 12kg

Eukanuba Adult Medium scores 2.2 and costs around £34.99 for 12kg

Lily’s Kitchen Organic Bake scores 3.5 and costs around £50 for only 7.5kg

So as you can see for a mere £16.78 for 12kg of Langhams Aldi dog food ( sold in 5kg bags) you can feed the same quality based on ingredients as many well known premium brands at a fraction of the cost, I am assuming Aldi will continue to sell it as quite often their shelves can be very low to empty for this great dog food.

What does the new Aldi dog food look like?

Like all premium brands of dog food Langhams is a plain dry extruded kibble, the size of the kibble is medium so it will be OK for medium to large breed dogs, small breeds can eat it too as our Chihuahua has no problems what so ever eating it and he always finishes his bowl before the Springer Spaniel and if you decide to move to this new Aldi dog food from another brand there is a handy feeding guide on the packet.

Final thoughts

For the price I believe you cant go wrong with Langhams dog food, It’s a hidden gem in the Aldi stores and well worth a sample.
