The Civil War was a Terrible War. There is no good way to put it. Teaching it to kids is not an easy topic.
A History of US War, Terrible War: Book Review
Book Summary
The book starts off with a small introduction as to what the Civil War was. In reality, it was nothing short of a terrible war. The war began because two sides could not agree. At this book mentioned, sometimes it even split families apart.
In addition to going into the hardship that took place during the Civil War, this book deals with all sorts of issues kids would be interested in like the food they ate and the clothing they wore. I liked this because while teaching the important facts to kids, it is nice to add some details that will peak their curiosity as well.
This book takes the kids on a four-year journey ending with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. A very appropriate topic to talk about before the kids move on in their studies.
Discussion
In my opinion, what made this such a terrible war, was that no one could agree. Most of the issues could have possibly been talked out and resolved, but instead led to a war. While teaching your kids about the Civil War, read some of the issues they were fighting over. See if your kids can come up with solutions. If you have a few kids, divide them up and have a debate. Sometimes both sides can settle on a compromise, but more often then not, a war will not need to start.
My Overall Opinion
The Civil War was nothing short of a terrible war. The sad reality, we have to teach it to our kids. This book is great. It takes a really adult issue and teaches it to kids in a way that they can understand. In the middle of the horrors, they will bring a topic or two that will keep kids interested without taking them off task. This book makes a great addition to any American History course.
