Okay, so you’ve done it – you’ve decided that you definitely want to go to Business School, and you’ve narrowed down your list of potential schools. You should feel proud of yourself – those are big steps to take.

So now that you’re ready to get serious about your MBA application, where should you begin? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with everything you think you have to do. But the best way to succeed is to focus, and to start small.

Here are two simple things you can get started with, that will have a huge impact on your chances to be admitted to business school:

Study for the test

You know you have to take the GRE or the GMAT to get into business school. And you know that if you want to get into a top MBA program, you need to do well on the test. But I still can’t emphasize enough the importance of diligence when it comes to test prep: a poor test score is one of the primary reasons that people don’t get admitted to their top-choice MBA programs.

Having a strong sense of your personal brand is extremely important when it comes to MBA admissions. But a strong GMAT or GRE score is the first hurdle; if you can’t clear that, then it is incredibly challenging to make up for it.

If you know you want to go to business school, you need to make test prep a priority: choose a test, decide on a study plan, and commit to it.

There are tons of free GMAT and GRE prep resources available online, so money doesn’t have to be a stumbling block preventing you from studying effectively. But if you have a tendency to procrastinate, or are worried about being able to stick to your study schedule, it is absolutely worth investing in some outside help, whether that’s a study group, a test prep class, or a private tutor.

Visit the school

Want to really make an impact on your school selection process? Nothing beats actually getting out of the house and making a visit to the schools you’re interested in.

When you spend time on campus, you’ll get a much better sense of what the school is like. You can talk to actual students, sit in on a course or two to get a feel for what the classroom experience is like, and learn more about the area.

But spending time on campus is about more than just getting a sense of whether you’d prefer to go to business school in NYC or Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s also about gaining a deeper understanding of the school itself.

Getting to know the school better gives you a leg up on every part of the application process: you will be able to do a better job of tailoring your application to show that you really “get” the school. You will be able to draw on some actual experience with the school when you’re writing the “Why us?” application essay.

And you’ll have common ground to discuss with your interviewer, whether you’re meeting with the admissions committee, a current student, or an alum.

Take the first step

Applying for your MBA can be a long process. The most important thing you can do to make everything go smoothly is to take action. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to have an exact plan for everything you’re going to do over the coming months. All you have to do is take action.

So if you’re ready to get started on getting admitted to business school, we’ve identified two important parts: preparing for the test, and getting on campus for a visit. Time to get moving.
